I still have some questions after all these years.
what was the use of 'the box' in metal gear.
you could "hide" yourself in the box, but it really hadn´t any use, did it?

afaik it didn't even help to hide you... and what about the cigarettes? what's the story behind that ?

As far as I know, that only works in Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. In Metal Gear you just have goggles. Or did I just never notice this?

By the way, the box is only really necessary in one location.

About the cigs; In MGSS they'll show you where the IR rays are. And if my memory serves me right also to see what direction the wind comes from when you want to jump of the second building with the hangglider. In Metal Gear the cigs are for prolonging the time you have for defeating Big Boss and climbing the ladder out of Outer Heaven (use it like you do a ration).

You could also use the box to travel by truck from building 1 to 2 (the guards will think it's cargo which should be delivered at the other building). Not sure if this was already the case in MG1; I know this is possible in the sequels.

Apart from that it adds some humor to the game

In Metal Gear 1, there is one place where it is impossible to pass without beign discovered by the camera. Here you must use the box.

Also, if you use the cigarette when you have destroyed Metal Gear and the countdown for Outer Heaven's self destruction is running, the timer is increased in 2000 units. There is a character that tells this to you if you call him/her by radio (I don't remember who is).

Off the record info: Metal Gear 1 can be finished in exactly two hours, if you know all the steps necessary in order to complete the game. I play it straigh from the beginning to the end sometimes.

That's MG2-only. In MG1 there are trucks that drive you to random locations, but only to annoy you. In MG2 it serves the purpose of travelling between buildings, and also in Metal Gear Solid.

And in MGS2 you can use various boxes to travel to different parts as well, just use one of them boxes on the escalator in one of the struts. It's always nice to see Kojima keeps some original ideas alive

Also if you equip the cigarettes and put in some code
you will get access to a secret sound test.

True, I've never tried it afterwards but 12 years back or so I've played a diskversion on my real msx, and i found out Solid Snake can climb walls indeed
