Emulator help [Was: Guys, I need your help]

UnregisteredGeplaatst: 08 Juli 2003, 02:51
I have recently aquired an MSX emulator, but am having trouble getting my games to play on it. I am really not familiar with how to get these old types of cpu systems to do what I want them to.

Any help would be great.

Email would be fine if you dont want to post

It's probably better to post here, so more people can help you. Your question is a bit too general to answer... before anyone can help you, the first things we need to know are:

  • Which emulator?
  • What OS?
  • Which or what kind of games? And how are they stored? (*.ROM or *.DSK files or something else)
  • What kind of hardware do you have? If it's very old, the emulator might run slow.

So please give us more information, and you'll get help.

Sorry for being vague before...

the emu is fMSX-DOS
im trying to play the original metal gear roms
Im using a 99 gateway and the emu runs fine, I guess. I just cant get the program to do anyting but sit there at the command line "page"

Hope I cleared up the confusion.

Fire away with the help!

Did you also download the system roms for that emu? (msx.rom, msx2.rom etc.)

Otherwise the command should be something like (IIRC)
fmsx-dos metal.rom

maybe it needs something like -rom 1 at the end, see http://www.komkon.org/~dekogel/files/msx/fmsx-dos.txt
or try to get a front-end programm for an easier interface

I've got a link for you Docbengal

www.msxnet.org/gtinter/Operate.htm

Here you can find how to run solid snake but its also a good
example of the options of fmsx-dos.
I usualy just use the basic commands :

fmsx-dos -ifreq 60 -diska diskgame.dsk fmpac.rom for disk game with fmpac music.
fmsx-dos -ifreq 60 romgame.rom for a rom game without any extra's.

Little question to you Docbengal, what soundcard do you use in dos.

Argon,

Monsterously helpful. Am playing and enjoying thanks to your guide.

Still having trouble formatting my drivea.dsk

I start fMSX, type "call format" it says select drive[A,B]? I press A, it says strike key when ready....

I have pressed return, and many other letters and I only get "bad parameter"

What am I doing wrong?

After the question about the drive (A or B), comes another question about the formatting :

1 - 1 side, double track
2 - 2 sides, double track

If you press on "1", it means that you want to format a disk (image) of 360 Kb

If you press on "2", it means that you want to format a disk (image) of 720 Kb

On a real machine, you can change the type of formatting, but it's not the case in an emulator : you must choose the type of formatting that corresponds to the size of disk image that you've inserted in the virtual drive A or B

After this choice, comes the phrase " Strike a key when ready"

Please also note that in some emulators, the formatting doesn't work. You must then use another emulator ....

I haven't tried it yet, because I have enough real MSX computers, but is it even possible to format a floppy to 720KB using an MSX emulator ???
Be warned that if you're using Windows XP, you probably won't be able to format a floppy disk to 720KB ! Support for 720K floppies has been dropped by good old Billy Gates

Well you can't use this file as a dsk image.
Wanna make one ??? this is the way....
when fmsx is started press left ctrl+F9.... now you get a little console.
type (for example) : da testdisk.dsk (d=disk change, a= virual diskdrive a)
then b to go back to the emulator
type call format and follow instrucions on screen.

voila,... you have made a clean 720k dsk image file..
