| Your last remark is kind of weird to me, what the hell does technology (the shenmue engine) have to do with anything? IOW: what is so special about shenmue's engine that other 3D engine's can't do?
|
I meant to say: SD Snatcher in 3D would be great. But not like Halo or any other FPS, it should be third person, like Shenmue.

Sure, but I think Nintendo has a better/smarter way of branding than most other companies. Like it or not, Mario is 100% pure game-IP not some funky cartoon character taken from TV like some games I worked on (powerrangers, Spongebob). In a world full of licensed shit, Nintendo stands out with quality games, and their own characters. I have trouble with seeing a Mario game as a 'branded' product, I don't call Ys 6 'branded' because Adol plays in it.
|
Valid points. Still, I think Nintendo should look further as at some point in time Mario will be worn out. I for one will make sure my future kids (?) won't like a fat plumber

Let's repeat the most important thing: what hasn't been done before?
Answer that and maybe we'll see some innovation some day. From what I can see, everything technically possible and commercially interesting has been done. Even the most innovative game of the last 5 years is probably a hybrid of 10 older games.

Although I've seen it briefly at the GameOn expo in Tilburg, Eye Toy looks fun, new and affordable to me. Inventing new genres is impossible, although some games however do stand out because of its stunning game dynamics. For example: Super Monkey Ball. Of course it's basically Marble Madness in 3D but having on the one hand a very simple essence combined with an enormous depth is sheer genious.

<Thom says Star Trek/Fantasy within one breath>
Startrek looks a bit out of place there

Well... most trekkies seem to like fantasy as well. And I know it because I studied Physics in Utrecht which means all your student colleagues don't like football.

ShenMue is a beautiful game by the way, but since I don't have a dreamcast I haven't played it that much, so it never got the chance to 'catch' me.
|
You really should. It's more than a game, it's an experience. Though some people compare it to watching drying paint. Borrow Jan-Lieuwe's. Now!

No Xenosaga is...let's see...who made that, oh right..Square and it was also a sequel. Best FF ever, FFVII...that's 7. The number after a title doesn't matter at all to me, as long as I enjoy playing it. If old ideas are well conceived, I don't mind the lack of new ideas.
|
YES! As long as you enjoy the game it's alright. Don't be bothered by reviews or bitter people like me (no sarcasm intended, I mean it!)
| | 7th-son msx novice Berichten: 17 | Geplaatst: 16 Juli 2003, 16:41   | I always loved the Ys series, and i will enjoy playing Ys 6, Maybe it's an idea to make another side scrolling Ys (3), I liked that game alot, and it still had the Ys feeling, even though it was completely different.
As for SD Snatcher, 3D version is ok, but not a First person view, Keep the RPG style to it, like they did Baldurs Gate for example, and keep the encounters, then instead of shooting different parts, your allowed to shoot everywhere you like. Maybe with more than 1 Runner to play with, or an online version, so you could surround a robot/snatcher and even shoot it in the back, then it would be possible to put in alot more enemies in 1 battle too!!
But not a first or 3rd person view, that would really f*ck up the gameplay, but thats my opinion
| | MrRudi msx addict Berichten: 467 | Geplaatst: 16 Juli 2003, 16:55   | Well basically Baldur's Gate is third person view too, and the third person is superman! But that's beside the point. I think a 3rd Person 3D look would work fine, like Shenmue or Metal Gear Solid.
I disagree on the Ys-III part though, it was a nice game, enjoyed it a lot, technologically advanced for MSX2, but I feel quite strong about how an RPG should look, and Ys-III wasn't it. A Platform game with adventure elements

Which is probably why they relatively recently created Wario, gave Luigi his own game, and also keep using Kirby and Link/Zelda, Donkey Kong... etc... Nintendo has so many great characters, who needs something new?
Really, in these times of 80% shit games coming out, I'm glad to have bought a 'Cube so I can enjoy Nintendo's excellent games.
Pikmin was great and the new Zelda, ... I'll use the word 'magical' for it.
Mario Sunshine is great too, although it's a lot easier than Mario 64 the gameplay is very smooth. I just hope they're not going to make Mario 128 even easier, like was suggested!
If you can't see the -sometimes very small, sometimes huge- innovation Nintendo brings into their games, you're likely to need your eyes examined | | 7th-son msx novice Berichten: 17 | Geplaatst: 16 Juli 2003, 20:53   | If you say 3rd person view, i think of a view like tomb raider
actually the view of baldurs gate is something like that, but further away from the main character.
RPG with platform elements dont mix you say? Ever played Castlevania: Symphony of the night on PSOne? I think it's a perfect mix.
Way better then a FPS with RPG elements.

Ninty should be ashamed of the bugs and the camera in SMS. I have a cube, I am enjoying it, but the best game on the cube is a Sega product: Super Monkey Ball.
And Nintendo hate Europe. No Animal Crossing over here.

Uhm... A candy bar?
No kidding, YS6 looks great. Whether it plays great is to be seen. The engine reminds me of Grandia (2) from GameArts (Saturn, Dreamcast, PS2) and that game played pretty well, so I think Falcom should be fine.
Note that any console port of Ys/DS/Sorcerian is not done by Falcom itself. Somehow that always shows.
About Nintendo: they have original concepts, but really a lot is targetted towards kids. I hate it whenever they explain the controls to me ingame; I want to find that stuff out myself. And a good game doesn't need many buttons.
And that's where Sega comes in. They have a lot of arcade experience (obviously) and that shows in their games. You boot the game, you press start and you're playing! The controls are mastered within seconds. Besides that: I always liked the blue hedgehog better than the fat plumber. And I prefer blue over red too.
(Yes Thom and everyone else: ShenMue ROCKS, especially when you're interested in japanese culture - or asian cultures in general for that matter... ShenMue 2 takes place in HongKong after all. Part 1 is available for Dreamcast. Part 2 is available for XBox & Dreamcast. Just so you know, hehe.)
