Crap... PSG winners suck :/
How come 2 USAS songs won the PSG round? Not really representative uh, 2 songs from the same game |

I was quite surprised too, especially after seeing the YS2 intro score a shitload of points in the first round.

Juba Ruins & Mohenjo Daro ARE one of the best PSG tunes ever. So you two should just shut up |

Oh don't get me wrong, the Usas songs are AWESOME. But I didn't expect they'd both win.

sight. WHY DO ALL DRUMTRACK SUCK!?
Such a pitty, so many talented musicians doing a great job at tracking some good'ol msx tunes. Great, but why is it that in all these years 90% of the music has no worthwhile drumtrack.
Take the given example from usas. What the F***! Please take a good listen;
first of all the drumtracks and instrument tracks are not cohesive at all. It's like listening to 2 different pieces of music at the same time.
second; arange some suiting percusion. Not take any old snare kick and hat just to have a beat. I hear lotsa reverb in the music, but the snare drum is dry as hell. should be the other way around.
3rd: pleeeeeeeaaaaas, pretty pleeeeaaaas ppl. stop making no-sense 4/4 standard rhythmtracks (having the hihat playing 16th without any dynamic (better boost the first 8th a bit to get a better flow) - using always the same kinda kick pattern.. booooring, not adding to the whole - and the snare... man, the snare. ever heard of ghostnotes? (for example) or AGAIN dynamic??.. not even mention some poor attempt for fills/breaks)
nuff said.
greets, ro (Hell yeah I play some mean drums, amongst others!)
Okay, it's your turn to flame at me now...

Blegh... first of all, it's ok to give criticism, but you could be more 'gentle'
And I am notoriously known for neglecting drumtracks (ask moa) but as I mentioned it's still a preview, and since I'm still sequencing with Midi it's not so flexible as a tracker (in regards to dynamics)
last, I disagree with the reverb issue... I always used too much reverb in all my songs, it just sounds better when you go easy on the reverb |

If I should shout gently, it wouldn't be called shouting. Now would it?
(don't sayd I didn't warn ya, check http://www.msx.org/forumtopic587.html)
lol.
Well, no offence guys. Like I said great compos, but sucking percussion. It's been dwelling in mind for years already. Your USAS track just triggerd me to write this flaming post. If one can't take criticism, one should not release crappy tracks. eh, ok I promise to be a more gentle here. (the USAS track sounds pretty cool though if it weren't for drums)
Regarding the Reverb - I ment putting more reverb on snare and less on the other instuments (find the right balance). Sometimes you just want the in-your-face sound (which is a result of no or less reverb)
But wasn't MIDI supposed to have more DYNAMIC options than any tracker? (velocity for example)
well, whatever, nevermind. |

I agree on the drums of the Usas track... Even I don't usually make those as standard as they are there right now ... I tell you what... I'm gonna try and greatly improve the drumtrack, and post it again soon
As regarding Midi -> Velocity etc is a very good way to add dynamics to a drum track, but with trackers it's SO much easier to tweak with volumes in a drum track... that's probably why I neglect the drumtracks... it's just too much work to make a decent drumtrack in Midi (yes, I'm lazy) |
