| Sunrise GFX9000 ??? How to use ?
|
Argon msx professional Berichten: 842 | Geplaatst: 21 Augustus 2003, 18:50   |
I found a GFX9000 cartridge with included SCART cable.
I tried using it on my Philips NMS-8250 with a Philips CM8833 monitor.
All I get is a white screen, no text, no nothing
Anybody can tell me if it is broken, or if I need to do something to get it started ???
Thank you.

That's correct behaviour.
A MoonSound doesn't automatically begin playing music either, does it? |

Well, I don't know
I got the GFX9000 by 'accident'.
I have no idea how it works.
I connected it to my monitor, but I don't even get the MSX-Basic screen.
So I ask you people, who know more about it if this is normal

Peter Burkhard already replied on comp.sys.msx that there's software for download at www.msx.ch
Also, there are tools, demos and other software that support Gfx9000. Don't know of any available for download tho. |

I think the GFX9000 functions independantly from the VDP in your MSX. So, you'll need 2 monitors (or 2 tvs or 1 monitor and 1 tv or Connect one monitor to your MSX as you would normally do; this will give you your normal startup screen, MSX BASIC and games etc. Connect the other one to the GFX9000. The GFX9000 will only display something interesting if you load up/use the right software for it and even then it will not /replace/ your MSX's VDP. At least I think you won't be able to play ordinary games over the GFX9000.
However, I'm really not in the know though, unlike probably some other person who's been replying, but doesn't seem to really want to answer your question in a manner that's helpful to you.

IIRC it is possible to get a superimposed screen, i.e. both the msx vdp and gfx9000 output are visible (though a bit blurred) at the same time.
You have plugged the G9000 scart into your monitor, right? You get a white screen, right? That is because the MSX doesn't use the g9000 by default. Hence you need a peace of software which transports data towards the g9000.
Concluding:
1) download g9000 specific software
2) put it on disc (preferably autoexecutable)
3) plug in g9000
4) start msx
I've got a g9000 myself, but I've NEVER used it because of the lack of software.

Utterly unfair, his answer was 100% correct. |

But not really helpful (IMO) and also "A MoonSound doesn't automatically begin playing music either, does it?" sounds utterly snobbish to me. But let us defend him hisself if he feels he needs to.

Oh well, I don't mind, maybe he has a bad day or something ?
I have those too from time to time
Well, I know now that it needs software to run.
I will check out what's available and try it later
I also received a Zemmix console today
With lots of Zemmix/Zemina cartridge games, I've been updating my games database and website:
http://www.msx.be.tf
Still lots of pics to upload, so see y'all later

I'm sorry, are you referring to me?
I believe I gave a correct, helpful answer. Downloading the Gfx9000 software from http://www.msx.ch allows you to control the MSX from the Gfx9000 screen, so no need for dual screens to use it.

It's a valid analogy, it wasn't meant to sound patronizing or snobbish.
Sometimes I wonder why I even try to be helpful.......

This is only true for the 1st Gfx9000 version. It's recognizable from the big black box it is in and needs to be connected via a flatcable. If your Gfx9000 is a normal MSX cartridge, it's a v2 or higher which does not support superimposing out of the box.
I had my v1 Gfx9000 upgraded to Video9000 which allows high quality superimposing and video digitization. Still, it's cheaper to get a 2nd monitor or a SCART-switch |

The guy who sold it to me, told me that he had it altered for video stuff too.
I only see the one monitor connector thou, don't know how it should look with the adaptation ?
Anyway, I probably won't use the video9000 stuff anyway, even if it's available
Wouldn't knwo how anyway

A Video9000 doesn't fit in a normal cartridgebox, because it's an extra board that's fitted on the normal board.
IIRC, it should have a monitor output (D-SUB), S-Video input, and a few knobs.

In the manual downloadable from http://www.msx.ch are clear and simple BASIC examples of how to use the video features. |

Ok, thanks. I think I already downloaded the manual.
Also WiOS, hope it will run on my NMS-8250 Probably not enough RAM
Then the seller must have lied, or I misunderstood what he meant by it
But for the price of 50 euro you won't hear me complain
I see the price for a new GFX9000 is a lot more.

You haven't checked out the Gfx9000 parts in Calculus? Or used it for some picture viewing? Or checked out Operation Banshee on TNI Windows '95? Too bad...
The upcoming GEM will support Gfx9000, so it's time to dust off that thingy! |
