Indeed, the emulator is quite off-tune. (Had the time to listen to it this time ;P). It sounds like there is only one frequency table/key-window used for every instrument. Perhaps only one sample (although the latter might have been the case with the original MT-32 as well ). Or is the frequency table 'natural' (linear?!) instead of logarithmic? Nah.. that would sound even worse... hmm... wolfie, you listen to this one and tell us what's wrong. |

What exactly are you listening to? And no, there are several specifc keyfollow/frequency tables dependent on the individual partials of each instrument. Yes, I'm also using the standard MIDI frequency table for tuning (logarithmic). Again, help me out here. |

Well, since the LA in LA/PCM stands for Linear Arithmetic (iirc) it's probably linear Anyways, I've tried it with Illusion City, and compared that to the CM-64 recordings I have right here, and there's still quite a way to go! |

it does stand for linear arithmetic... but iirc that applies to the way the attack, decay, sustain and release are calculated
I've played with a real mt-32 for quite some time in my early PC years, so I know pretty well how it sounds (i've also made several patches myself on that little multitimbral module from Roland) ... and I do know the emulator needs LOTS of work to even remotely sound like a mt32 ...

Ok, now I have a PC, that has enough speed to emulate also MT-32... The test result was really bad! I tried to listen some Illusion City sound tracks and I had a hard time trying to regognize, what song that is trying to be.
Is this because the emulator is still in so early stage, that it is just replaying something or am I doing something wrong??? (In my computer FM-PAC versions sounds 1000 times better)

I've heard the music from IC on a whole host of MIDI devices, and it just always sounds like crap... The music just wasn't made for MIDI. They pull off all sorts of tricks to get cool sounds and voices to create that phat ambience, but you just can't do that with MIDI... Anyhoo, it was a big disappointment for me, perhaps that's what you're experiencing...

WEll, the music in IC sounds pretty good on my real MT-32! It's a bit odd: the sound effects are still on PSG |

It sounded a bit like, when you play FM-PAC music on 7MHz computer with player, that does not support it.

That's not how it should sound. I think some of the tunes of IC don't sound very well, not even on real MT-32, but the introdemo should be quite a treat.

I guess it's a tad personal or something. I found the FM music sounded a whole lot better. Much more 'aggressive' and 'noisy'. Some songs sounded okay I guess, most I really didn't like tho. I also heard the music on a real MT-32. We even tried kicking it up a bit by using a newer Korg module a friend had and finetuning the voices, still didn't sound too good tho |

Ehm, that's all quite nice and stuff, but if you want to give canadacow a chance to improve the emulator you guys need ot be a bit more specific than "Ahhh, that sounds awful!". Give the man mp3's or wav's to listen to!

Do have one hehe ....
The big problem with the MT32 emu is no (or little) sysex support,
that's why most games sound awful.
But canadacow is doing a great job here.
