here's a challenge....

After some important MRC-coding things are done Latok and I are planning to create an old-school 'Scroll and logo' demo. Just a nice song, a cool logo and an extremely funny text. Relatively easy to develop, fun to do and euhm.. already looking forward to typing very silly texts and greetings

The challenge?

Join in and create a simple scroll & logo demo and show it to the visitors of the MRC (or your website). Send greetings to the people, groups or websites you like, show your cool coding skills to the entire community!!

Been there, done that?

To me, that doesn't matter at all. I'm already looking forward to reading some new scrolls . In the past we have seen many attempts of highly ambitious projects. Some of them really made it, but many of them were stalled or abaondoned. I have the feeling a lot of people don't develop MSX demo's or games because they think they should be even better than Unknown Reality or Pumpkin Adventure 3. Especially when you start developing, raising your goals that high is quite rediculous. Besides, creating a simple demo is FUN. Once you made a simple product with one or two other people, maybe a bigger product is a logical next step!

I still got a - cool - font Arno Dekker created long time ago. ... and uhm.. a logo... check the top right of your screen.. that MRC... doesn't it...

GuyveR once suggested something and I think this one could be interesting. We could make some sort of 'development diary' in which we - more or less - explain what we did and how we did it. Sometimes very very very detailed with bits of code, sometimes just a bit of information. Such a diary can help others creating similar demo's (and potential future products) too.

oK, this is great. I'm willing to expose my lack of programming skills. I'm going to program a smooth scroll with direct writing to the I/O ports of the V9938, ok? I have never done something like that before and I don't want to use already available assembly codelistings. Let's do it from scratch, only with the info of technical sources about the VDP. And yes, you can all laugh at me

Ok, we are going to make this very basic demo. A nice drawing, a nice scroll and cool music.

Zett, it would be GREAT if you want to make a font for this demo. It is going to be a demo in the MRC colors, I guess.

A letter in the demo will have a resolution of 16x16 pixels. We are going to make the demo in screen 5. Which letters do we need? Of course, we need A-Z, but also 0-9 and furthermore ',' '.' '!' and '?'

Screen 5 uses a palette. Screensplits are way too difficult for me, so we need to know in which palette snout has this drawing he wants to use. The font needs to use the same palette as the drawing.

Snout, can you please share us here what picture you want to use?

Argon, can we use your graphical skills as well?

Snout, I do know you already have this font, but people here really seem to enjoy helping us out graphically! I think we should do it from scratch with current MSX users! I think it would be awesome if Argon creates the main picture for the demo, for instance. And Zett the font for the scroll.

Indeed, an 100% all-new demo would be a lot cooler. I was thinking of converting the MRC logo to 16 colours. Maybe Argon or Zett can do something with that?

Let them decide. They'll post their ideas right here...About the music. I think we shouldn't make a Moonsound song, but stick to MSX-MUSIC only. Maybe MSX-AUDIO? Moonblaster 1.4 comes to my mind immediately.

Snout, do you want to make a cool tune to go along with the demo?

any1 for a CreateOldskoolMSXDemo.exe ?

A small pc app in which you select a font, you input text, you select a tune, you select and place some additional images etc. and the app creates an msx-demo for you.

Or is that all too unromantic?
