Hi everyone! My real name's Aaron Smart (yes, I know that's a weird surname), I'm 18 (just a punk kid compared to most of you!), and I'm living in Limerick, Ireland. I've just started going to the university here and I'm studying IT&T (Information Technology & Telecommunications).

I grew up in many a different country - first England, then Scotland, then England again, then Saudi Arabia, then Ireland (during the Gulf War), then back to Saudi, then England... again, now Ireland. I got my first computer (a 386DX-25 PC - those were the days ) in 1991 - and I never even heard of an MSX until about 1997!

This was around when I was starting to get interested in older computers and consoles and stuff. I don't know why or how it started... oh yeah, I got a ZX Spectrum +2 for FREE at my school (they were going to throw it away!). Since then I've had a BBC Micro (the first computer I got which was older than me!), a NES, a Master System, a Commodore 64, another, more broken Spectrum +2 and a Binatone TV Master Mk. IV with FOUR *totally different* games (lie).

Anyway, my first encounter with an MSX was when I saw my friend's (in England) Toshiba 64k one (it was originally his parents), with just a tape recorder and a handfull of pretty crappy games, on a black & white TV. It seemed *pretty* lame (comparing it to similar systems, of course), and he was the only person I knew who even knew about the MSX system, never mind owning one!

It wasn't until I FINALLY got a new PC (I was still using the 386 until 1998!) and got interested in the emulation scene that I found out about the MSX again. I got RuMSX about 3 years ago but had a hard time trying to find any games - besides, the only games I knew about on it were the first two Metal Gear games! I never really played any MSX games until a couple of months ago.

I've always had an interest in mainly Japanese games so I never knew why I didn't look into MSX games until now. When I got the entire GoodMSX1/2 sets (yes, I know ROMs are bad, but it's not like they're still making the cartridges) I was amazed at the vast amount of Konami games on the MSX - including THREE of my favourite game series - Gradius/Nemesis/Salamder, Hyper Olympic/Sports and Parodius!

I have to say the MSX has definately improved my life, or something... at least it's solved the mystery of where Pentaro came from ...

I used to occasionally do some crapp BASIC programming on my BBC, Speccy and QBASIC on my old PC, but now I'm starting off with the *amazing* Turbo Pascal (yes, they DO still teach that!*), and will be doing C next year, so I hope I'll eventually be able to something help the MSX demo community.

I can hack text and gfx tiles in games to an extent (as long as there's no kanji!), and I can read Japanese kana and *some* kanji - the only hard part is UNDERSTANDING it So I'm willing to help someone in that field too.

Anyway, I feel the MSX is special compared to other systems, and the community has something... different to others. Maybe it's because there are no annoying yanks! I dunno...

My quest would be to have my own MSX some day, but that's not gonna happen any time soon, judging by the prices for working MSX2s on ebay, never mind the rarity of software! It's not easy when you appear to be the only person in the country who is actually interested in MSXs

Anyway, I'm writing too much! I'll go now

I did some BBC computer programming too in the past.. oh, like 15 years ago.

Must agree, the MSX has something extra.. a soul you might wanna say. *dunno but it sure feels good

good luck exploring the dark dungeons here!

First of all... You've got a very cool nickname..."Zilog Jones" ehhehe, pretty cool

About the amazing turbo pascal, man, this is the most powerfull high level language after the C++... After you learn Pascal, try to experiment Delphi... It is the best programming language ever! Easy like VB, and powerfull like C++...

And it is quite cool to hear that you've started to get interest about MSX the way you did! Much after the end of the system in the market, eheh...

What, there ARE Americans who know about the MSX?!

I didn't want to insult anyone with that comment - I have nothing against most Merkins... just the annoying ones.

Lots of americans got to know MSX through Metal Gear, thousands wanted to play Metal Gear 2. Most of them are not MSX fans per se, but I know about 3 who are. And there's some canadians too

If that guy from 15 years ago is called 'Philip Pera', then never trust him, he is a rip-off.
