sjoerd, better let the USER decide on how much channels and steps he/she wants to use. Take a good look at Oracle and learn some tricks. Max 32. channels (msx music/audio version that is) and 64 steps... scrolling hor. and vert. over your screen like no hassle.
etc.
It's preference settings that make a program really work.
good luck.

Also, a pattern length of 64 has advantages over a length of 16. Things are less repetitive this way, tho it's the composers fault if it's repetitive, a 16step length doesn't do much to help here. And when using a high bpm/speed, seeing about 2 patterns a second isn't really useful.
Anyway, I took a look at realfun yesterday, it has enough potentions to get real fun, but sampleram-support is essential. Personally I wasn't bothered by the horizontal editing and the FST-style blocks (mb blocks were always a bit crappy), but there are still enough little thingies to improve.

Heh, well, if >16 channels are hard to incorporate in the current code without redesigning and rewriting a large part of it, I would say 16 channels is something which can be overcome. And with the prospect of RealFun 3... ^_^ Heh, I'm not complaining!

Expanding to more steps isn't so bad ... just resize the memory reserved for the notes, and add an offset variable.

Actually it's easier to add more channels than to add more steps. (I think ). |
