SDLHi is constantly @ 100%
SDLLo is a bit funny. if i switch to it from SLHi, it remains for quite a while @ 100%, then it comes down to 50-60. but it fluctuates a lot. sometimes it even goes down to 28 but thats rare.
SDLGL is consuming as much cycles as SDLHi

the default 2.4.18 is still running fine.

EDIT

glxinfo says A LOT!
i have direct rendering, lots of extentions.
the funny thing is that glxgears runs afwull. 100% and 74.400 FPS

What's wrong with using a default kernel?

well, the 2.4.18 has less features and is not optimized for my system (it has a broad configuration for many things that i do not have). and the kernel-headers that are required to compile the nvidia-module to not exactly match the version i have. old(default) kernel 2.4.18-bf2.4 needs kernel-headers, but i could never find them in debians ftp servers (apt-cache).
i just took another peek and suddenly my eye catches the corresponding kernel-headers. but now i would have to download 2.4.18-bf2.4 source and headers and then again do everything. this also means configuring it by hand which may lead to the problem i have with every custom kernel.
but switching back to older kernels is not really an option.

DarQ, could you please join us on IRC? Channel #openMSX on server irc.freenode.net.
I'll be better able to help you there.
(I'm also running Debian, btw.)

DarQ: You left IRC before I found this, so I'll post it here.

This might help if you have a VIA chipset and are using the nVidia driver build 5328:
www.sh.nu/download/nvidia/linux-2.4/

But probably downgrading to nVidia driver build 4496 is more reliable.

note taken. but i'll use the older version anyway. at least, it already seems to have the reputation of working reliable/properly. i'll see it tonight..
