Probably in the wrong forum so move if it is...
Why do MSX carts have a hole on the bottom left hand side of the cartridge? The Hole seems to vary in size from a couple of CMs to a few mms. Someone said it was for a locking device, but I've not seen and MSX that does so and I can't see why this would be as no other console has this feature.... (except the Megadrive and Snes but they had slight notches and the PC Engine which physically locked the Hucard in place...)

to make sure you would not accidentally put in the cartridge reversed.
(left/right 180degr. if you know what I mean)

uhm, ro, carts aren't symetric anyway.. with or without a hole, you can insert them only in one way..
The hole was done so that you could look through it!

oh, wait.. THAT hole (I thought the one on the print)...
No I will tell you where it is for.
On some MSX computers there are cartridge ports where you can LOCK the cardridge with a pin through that hole. I once had one of those extentsions... IIRC it was on my vg8235 MSX.
** edit: come to think about it. It really was an extentions. You could hook up your cartridgeport with this little plastic thingy...

Since MSX is not a CONSOLE but a COMPUTER, the cartridges often have (heavy) cables on them. Like RS232C or 6 meters of SCSI cable
Locking the cartridge will save your MSX from destruction when it gets pulled out by accident. |
