MSX Software Database

Your opinion, however humble it is, does not matter. As you might know by reading the news archive of this site, an official MSX emulator (called MSX PLAYer) exists, which you can buy (by buying MSX Magazine). Together with the MSX Game Reader, you can use nearly all 15 year old software, so the software is not obsolete. Additionally, a lot of the software you want to put online is FOR SALE online, for use with MSX PLAYer.

So neither of your arguments hold water. Even then, abandonware does not exist, and it's illegal to distribute copyrighted programs even if you own the originals.

If you want to preserve the MSX software in their true form, maintain a database of hashvalues. People can then make/find/buy copies and compare them with the hashvalue in the database to see if their copy is correct, and not damaged or otherwise broken.

(As I had expected, this whole discussion diverted from the original subject, the creation of a software database with a software listing ONLY. I will not distribute software on this forum. Only the excel-sheet database or whatever format it will take on.)

The existence of an emulator for sale makes the games not obsolete any more? There wouldn't even be msx-emulators if the msx-system wasn't obsolete, would there? If there would still be msx-computers made, and to my knowledge there aren't, then it would be a different story altogether. Or are you saying that MSXPlAYer has bought the copyrights of all the games?

Yeah, it's getting quite a familiar routine indeed. Nuff said about it this time? Let us indeed focus on the legal part of the discussion.

Which in fact does not exist, because the subject of this topic is about a database with NO software, just the info about the software. So, on topic!

MSX PLAYer can be regarded as an msx-computer. It's an official, commercial means of playing MSX games, just like real hardware MSX computer would.

Anyway, I suggested the use of hashvalues for the database, which makes the database not only record data like title and date, but also store a fingerprint of the actual software. SHA-1 hash should be more than enough.

That's why MSX-PLAYer is a very limited emulator : no multiple screenshot feature, no saving of the music in a wav file, no saving of the state emulation, no debugger, no configurability (except skins for the look !), no support for MSX-AUDIO and Moonsound, I stop here because the list of missing features is like a mountain of forbidden actions !

To get back the topic : a list with all existing MSX games, tools, demos, magazines, ... can't be a source of problems if this list doesn't include copyrighted downloadable files. But freeware can be included without any problems !

I think that goes beyond the scope of the actual database. But I would be happy to create a freeware archive / public domain archive somewhere in the near future, if i can provide for the webspace. Otherwise it will be on P2P networks to download.

Hash info is a good tip Guyver, i will keep that in mind for the next update. Thanks.
