Try:
WIDTH 40
SET SCREEN
(SCREEN 0: WIDTH 38: COLOR 15,4,4: KEY ON).
Try seeing if it can remember the date:
SET DATE "11/12/04"
turn off the machine, leave it turned off for ~10 seconds, then turn on and do
GET DATE A$
PRINT A$
And no, to my knowledge there is no full system checker on MSX. MSX's generally 'just work'.
There are a few memory checkers tho...

I have seen some yellow tube with i tink 3v on it.
That could be that battery.
MSX is realy the evolutionairy step between Ol'Speccy, othermicro's and the PC
Its a kind of missing link. Its Z80 at max , well Z80f then and not Z80a, altough that just speed those extra letter on it.
On speccy people do now things that were realy impossible in 1982-4 but now theres multicolor, sound, a C++ envirement (in 40k hisoft!!).
I try to 'set' as well with width.
So i look for the cmos or bios ok. It should have it, with a battery!!!
If you could give me the link for those memory utils I would be greatfull to you
I go test your suggestion.
I use phone so beybey
