On one of the photo's from Japan there is a very cool picture of an MSX game reader with hydlide 3 inserted.
Could someone give me more information on this nice hardware thingie. Is it specially made for personal computers?? Or is it only to be used in combination with the MSX PLAYer??

It's an USB MSX Game Reader. You can use it on any hardware device with a USB connection. Given the fact that there is software available for that device which can handle the MSX Game Reader of course.....And that software happens to be the MSX PLAYer, yes
Ah well, I think in the future there will be more MSX emulators supporting the MSX Game Readers....
Please check our newsarchive, we have posted many many times about this new device. |

Which makes me wonder. Would it be possible to connect a slotexpander to it? Does it behave exactly as an MSX cartridgeslot?

The Game Reader does not support I/O devices. Sorry. As far as I know the Game Reader is more or less a ROM dumper. But I could be wrong |

Really? The MSX Game Reader is copyrighted; ASCII/MSX Association. And they probably won't like other emulators than MSX-PLAYer supporting it. We'll see... |

Why wouldn't they?
The more software supports it, the more they will sell of it. Besides, it promotes using ORIGINAL software with emulators, so it decreases piracy.
I think there is not a single good reason to disallow other emulators from using it.

'backwards' has nothing to do with it. You CAN call it UPWARDS compatible. That means it has less features than a normal MSX cartridge slot.
I'm sure there will be a newer version some day with I/O and SOUND support.
Sound will probably need USB2.0 tho...

Uhm, if it's actually a ROMdump device, then they probably will have problems with many exotic ROMcartridges....

Most mappers are have memory mapped I/O (which is ofcourse supported). Only some indeed very exotic cartridges (korean pirate stuff) use real I/O for switch.

Using an internal rom database (like openMSX does with romdb.xml), even the most exotic games should be runnable
