Hello everybody, I've got a problem... A friend of mine gave me an MXS Philips NMS 8280 saying that it didn't work properly and that if I had repaired it, I could have keep it for me.
The problem is this: the floppy drive doesn't work, in fact if I insert a disk and write files "a:" (or "b:" the msx aswers me "Disk offline". I've tried to substitue the drive eith a PC one but it also didn't work (in this case, however, if I dont' insert any floppy in the drive, the message is "Insert a floppy in drive b: and then strike a key", or something similar). During this time the drive seems to work (the LED turns on and the drive make some noise as it is reading the floppy, but however it doesn't work.
Could anybody help me? Thanks a lot
P.S. I'm not expert, so please don't be difficult... |

im not an expert either but just using a pc drive will never work. if you need a new drive, a pc drive can be used but must be modified.

if msx said "disk offline" that = disk not formmated
if you insert a formated disk, then you need clean the heads
if your diskdriver got a belt, replace it.
if that don't work, you need remplace that with another DD 3 1/2 diskdriver, or a HD diskdriver but changing the jumpers..
note: the jumpers on new PC diskdriver not allways are DIP switch or fisical jumpers. A lot of case are simple welded bridges

seems to me you don't realise the multiple posts are due to the current server problems, and are yourself trying to increase your post-count by placing off-topic wise-crack remarks |

Keitaro.
Do you realize what for machine you've got?
It's the most expensive MSX sold by philips.
I hope you've the manuals to, if you've not, take a look at.

Thanks for the help, I'm going to visit the site that you showed me...
However after having received it I've done some researches, discovering that NMS 8280 should be a very good MSX, that's why I want to repair it...
By the way, I've read that I should place a jumper between connectors 33 and 34 so I connected them with a piece of wire but the drive didn't work again...
It's strange that neither of the two floppy drives work (however te MSX hasn't been used for many years by the friend that gave it to me)...
(excuse my English, I'm Italian)

Probably the drive(s) just broke down. Like someone here said before: replace them with a PC drive. Be sure to disable the HD (high density) functionallity. It's been a while, but I used this trick to repair many 8250/55/80 computers, and since then, PC drives have only become cheaper...

Vet strange both drives are broken at the same time.
Maybe it is the power supply.
You can always mail me and look on my website www.bas-ditta.info
There are NO drive-belts in a 8280
Only belts in European MSX 2 computers with types: 8230, 8235, 8245 and ofcourse a lot of extended single sided drives.

Could be the power supply even if the LED lights up?
