floppys for nms 8280

UnregisteredGeplaatst: 06 April 2004, 19:54
hi, while cleanig the garage i found a philips nms-8280 und a vg-8235 home computer and a few floppy disks.
now i have a few questions:

i want to make a copy of this floppys because i dont know how long this disks can store their data.
can i use new 3.5" discs for this? because the floppy drive in the computer is for 720K floppys

can i store the programes which are availeable on this page on 720K formated flopys with the floppy drive in my normal pc? or must i use a emulator?

do all the programs/games run on the computer?

i would be very pleased about a few answers
(please forgive me for my bad english )

well, turn ON the write protection and put the disk in a PC and to make a backup...

So, you can try, copy all files....if that not return any error, THAT OLD DISKS are better for store the files than a new disk, because the new disk are all cheaper shit!.

If that disk don't get humidity you can be sure than these disks are perfect... and will work a lot of more time.

On other side i recomended to use a cleaner disk kit to clean the DISKDRIVER of the MSX.

It really depends on what is on the disks. If there are only files on them and you do not need the MSX bootsector (like for using MSX DOS) you can just copy the files to your PC harddrive and keep them there. If they contain games that may use sector loading or the disk has MSX-DOS on it you will need to use special programs for it.

You can indeed use new diskettes, but you will probably end up buying HD diskettes. These do work, if you tape the HD-hole, but do not perform optimally. The best thing in that case would be to buy new DD diskettes in something like an office supply chain. A good office supply chain or disk supplier will still carry DD disks. The best thing would then be to copy it on your MSX for maximum compatibility.

If you want to copy them on your PC, I suggest you use a program like DiskManager or something similar to copy the disks to a disk image. This will (usually) also work for sector loading games and/or MSX-DOS. Games with copy protections may prove more troublesome tho... If you want, after creating your new disk image, you can then write that image to a new disk. You may want to write protect your original disks, just in case.

Hope that helps... If you need any more help, just shout...

I'll mention that the VG 8235 can not read DD disks (720kb) only single side disk(360kb)
