Second thing: at least in Canada with at least my WSX, if you leave it on for more then 10 minutes, transformator starts charring: the fumes are disturbing and smell is awful.

If that's true you're pumping in a whole lot more than 120V!! AFAIK the Panasonic MSX2+ computers have the same transformer as the Turbo-R. My Turbo-R has eaten 120V happily for about a year now. It even survived central america where voltage peeks of about 140V occur with almost herz like frequency...

Well I don't know whether the sample unit is included in the MSX-Audio 'spec'... (at least the Toshiba MM has one but without sampleram, and afaik the Yamaha MM doesn't have a sample unit at all).

Actually my dad owns a (modded) Toshiba with 256kB sample RAM . I myself have a 'flip' Music Module with 32kB, but I have an expansion set. It still has to be built in, though... I've got that expansion set several years now, but I never seemed to have the time for it, or I forgot about it. Well, right now, I still don't have time for it...

If you are going to save in metal gear, you may need cassete interface.

Who on earth does THAT?!
I beat the game in mere 3 hours...

- all the Kanji roms for folks who care about it

AFAIK only the Sony F1XDJ has all Kanji roms, the Panasonic ones lack one (or so it seems). I recall MCCM saying that... Don't know which ish tho...

Well, both WX and WSX come with rom pack with stone-age Office suite, and since it's for Japan, I guess it have to support Kanji.

I've seen the board, and it has too many EPROM chips.

Here (www.faq.msxnet.org/msx2p.html) is says:

Panasonic FS-A1WSX: 64kB RAM, 128kB VRAM, 720kB 3,5" floppy disk drive, MSX Music, 256kB JIS 1st+2nd Kanji, Ren-Sha Turbo (autofire), hardware pause key, firmware (A1 Cockpit, Word Processor with Color Print Support for Color Printers, MSX-JE), no cassette interface, S-Video output, Z80B CPU that can be switched to from 3.5MHz to 6MHz via I/O port

Panasonic FS-A1WX: 64kB RAM, 128kB VRAM, 720kB 3,5" floppy disk drive, Ren-Sha Turbo (autofire), hardware pause key, MSX Music, 256kB JIS 1st+2nd Kanji, firmware (A1 Cockpit, Word Processor, MSX-JE), Z80B CPU that can be switched to from 3.5MHz to 6MHz via I/O port

Hmmm... I'll try to find that MCCM again. I really believed it said that only the F1XDJ had the Kanji crap built in. The Sanyo Wavy machines don't have JIS1&2 for sure, AFAIK they only have JIS1...

[edit]Does anyone know what JIS-ROMs the Turbo R has?[/edit]

Congratulations!

The only big concern you might have is replacing the flat floppy drive belt or the whole floppy drive in this unit.

Why would I want to replace it?

Because it usually not working well or not working period. Specifics of WX/WSX/ST/GT. Original rubber flat belt is not very reliable. Ikeda sells silicon flat belts. They are more reliable, but cost more then a new PC floppy drive. So it's up to owner:

- buy silicon belt from Ikeda and use original floppy for a (hopefully) long while

or

- replace it with PC floppy drive. This require finding appropriate drive, and unsoldering connector from motherboard, making custom cable and soldering it to motherboard. Lots of work, but once done, you don't have to worry about belt ever again

I stick with the second solution

The cheaper, the better.

Thou wilt buy at Ikeda's!! pc drives are ugly! Why waste a Turbo R or similar with such an ugly disk drive?! And all the crap coming of it --> All HD disks have to be wrapped in sticky tape because of the second hole in it... Replacing a drive belt will be much cheaper in the long run
