I only have one opinion,
If it are games/music disk where a lot of time has been spend to create it, i woulkn't make it freeware.
If it are trools/drivers and other things created for programmers i would say it's gpl and freeware, like you see on www.msxsoft.nl the tools i created are completely gpl.
for example the music disk soepfiskje isn't freeware, but as expected of Near Dark all software which is released, after 6 months of it's release date it will be freeware |

Poll+Challange idea:
First let ppl come up with tons of themes, then after a (not too big) megapoll 4 themes remain, and the frontpage poll decides which will be the next theme-challange (music/gfx/code.. like underwater, bounce, snowfall etc.).

I think, that OS poll could be kind of interesting.
What of these you use most?
- MSX-DOS 1.x
- MSX-DOS 2.2x
- MSX-DOS 2.3x
- MSX-DOS 2.4x
- UZIX
- I use only BASIC
It would be expetially nice to hear, how many have upgraded to DOS 2.4x now since it has become freeware.

Are all those dos2 versions relevant for executables? As in: can any dos2 app run on any dos2 version? I wouldn't know which version I run |

Practically no... To be honest, I don't even know what is the difference between DOS 2.2x and DOS 2.3x. BTM and some BAT files requires DOS 2.4 as it's internal commands are heavily extended. (It's pretty much like 4DOS for PC)
I have personally used DOS 2.4 for about 7 years now and I expetially like the use of TAB-key (Pretty much like DOS2TAB, that I made for earlyer versions) and sometimes internal CPU, ALIAS, PUSHD and POPD commands are also nice to have. It is also nice, that I don't need to write CD in front of directory anymore. (To go to first directory, TAB & Return is enough) With BAT & BTM files you can do even quite a complex programs, but unfortunately they are slow (try for example the DIR command replacement that comes as an example)

Difference between 2.2x and 2.3x is some extra instructions for the latter. Most important are the IF EXIST clause and the ability to check for equality, IF %MyName%==[D-Tail], likewise. XSW-Magazine once published an article from Alex Wulms on that matter. I've DOS2.41 running for about two weeks ^_^, and I must say, it works fine . I also adore the TAB-completion
The only nasty thing of DOS2.3x is (for all that matters), Bombaman won't run from DOS2 anymore on an A1ST (TPA size is too small). Replacing COMMAND.COM with 2.2x or 2.4x will solve this matter. My current config is:
MSX-DOS kernel 2.30 (A1ST)
MSX-DOS.SYS version 2.30
COMMAND.COM version 2.41 |
