hey guys,
since there are no "ladies" in here
to whom I could ask for help on it,
could you, please, help me to have
a complete tutorial on using those
wonderful MSX emulators?
I have fMSXDOS and blueMSX...
love them both, but was not able
to make them run any HD image,
nor have I found any programs,
just a few games and boot disks...

Most of those emulators have excellent manuals. They usually contain a lot of information on how to use the emulator. I wouldn't really use fMSXDOS anymore, unless you have a very slow computer. Try either NLMSX or blueMSX, both are easy to use and emulate the diffent MSX computers pretty well.
If by HD image you mean a 1.44MB floppy disk, the MSX system doesn't natively support this. I think it's possible using an IDE interface, which I think openMSX emulates. I don't know if you can emulate the LS120 though. If by HD you mean a harddisk, I think openMSX is the only emulator that supports Harddisks. openMSX is a little less user friendly though...

I agree with Sonic, that would be easier to use the blueMSX, cause of his good interface. Another good one is the RuMSX...
The emulators have good documentation, but another good source of information is the Ultimate MSX FAQ www.faq.msxnet.org/.
To deal with the images of disks, there is a very usefull free utility that you can get here: members.chello.at/lexlechz/DISKMGR.ZIP. |

I hope so... Using openMSX is even more difficult than programming a VCR!!!

Seriously, it's not so much difficult, but I've gotten too lazy to remember commands and then type them in this point and click world we find ourselves in...

I hold you to that, manuel! Honestly, I haven't tried to work more than 15 minutes to get the thing working... And why should I? I have a Pentium III 600MMX, so probably it won't emulate perfectly. Moreover, I got a real A1ST here. I think any emulator is a bit obsolete for me... Well, I use NLMSX/BlueMSX to test my crap in an emulator, and sometimes I use them for drawing... My MSX mouse isn't that good anymore
Furthermore, YSMSX: welcome! |

I just did some research for you, and I found this. It seems to be some kind of general help file for fMSX, I think it doesn't matter what version you have. I don't know the differences though, because I've only worked with fMSX-DOS, and believe me, that is long ago.
If you need to utilize the commandline to issue a specific start of fMSX, you can either make a CMD/BAT-file (open a text editor, and write down the command) and run it, or you can open your DOS-prompt (Start -> execute -> cmd [enter]) and type the whole thing there. Good luck! |

Or use some launcher. I'm sure there are more, but this was the quickest example I could find. |

Sonic, D-Tail: for most things using the emulator without any GUI is not really difficult. E.g. you can drag and drop a .dsk file on the openMSX executable. Also we have very good manuals online, which explain every day use. It's really not very difficult. If you have problems, you can also contact us via the means that I have mentioned here very often and which are also in the manual.
I think it would run very reasonably on a P3 600Mhz, but don't try the hq2x scaler... (There are performance tips in the manual as well...)
Anyway, I expect that we release in about a week. Be patient |

I know it's not difficult... Like I said, I'm just too lazy. I'm used to NLMSX which is pretty easy to control. I just hit F6 and select a disk-image of my choise. If I press CTRL and ALT the mouse capture function is turned on, press it again and it's off, apart from that I can change pretty much anything in the emu with a few mouse-clicks. It's just easier (as in requieres less effort) that's all...
There's nothing wrong with the emulation part of openMSX. Well, apart from the fact that I can't emulate a Turbo-R on my PIII 866. I just hope that maybe in a future release you could add a nice windoze gui. Well, just my lazy opinion... |

Allright... Here's your tutorial... Since I haven't been using blueMSX very long I'll just focus on NLMSX. This process may be similar for emulators like RuMSX and blueMSX. RuMSX was kick ass but hasen't been worked on for ages, so is very outdated by now. Like I said, the easiest emulators to use are NLMSX and blueMSX. Don't expect to run openMSX unless you have a solid backgrounnd in quantumphysics It is the only(?) emulator that emulates harddisks though... But anyways, NLMSX...
1) Download NLMSX.
2) Install NLMSX.
3) Start NLMSX.
4) Click Help on the menu bar.
4) Click Help in the help menu.
5) In the new window, click on usage.
6) Click on the new topic below usage.
Read that text, all underlined words link to a part that explains the word in further detail. You can select additional topics on the left-hand side of the help window. Almost *everything* is explained here. Anything from changing disks to setting up your own MSX computer. If you read this text just once you should be running NLMSX in less than 30 mintues. Be sure to use the 'latest' version of NLMSX, which is version 0.48. Just search in Yahoo for the words 'NLMSX' and it'll guide you to the website.
If you're having trouble installing, just let us know here. There's always someone here willing to help, if they can. If after reading the manual you still have some questions I'd be glad to answer them. blueMSX is a similar emulator which also comes with very good help files. Everything is explained into detail with pictures and all. blueMSX seems to be a little more CPU intensive though, and does not emulate the MSX Turbo-R yet. Well, good luck... |
