Where can I get them? The only place I've found that sells them is Yamaha itself, but I've heard they won't sell them in quantities less than 10,000 or so. So where's a place I can get them cheap?

some konami game cartridge got sound chips,
some got the SCC chip, and only you need to build a switch to turn off the ROM that allow to start the msx in BASIC mode.
But i don't know if that chip is the SCC
anyway i the last month buy a music-module... great
but very few games support that

Actually, I'm looking for the chip because I'm in the process of modifing my Sega Master System (which is quite similar to the MSX) with an FM chip because some of my games have an FM sound mode and the Master System only has PSG sound (the Japanese SMS has FM sound).

I think you should buy XBOX with modchip. It supports FM sound in Mark III games.

No, I want it to work on the real thing, and the US/European releases of Mark III games that have FM sound still have the data needed to enable FM sound.
