MSX story is a long story and it's still not finished, because many MSX lovers are still busy, directly or indirectly, with their favorite real or emulated machine(s).

I don't think that MSX1 is forgotten, and that's why, for example, in advanced emulators like blueMSX or openMSX, the specific MSX1 palette of colors is implemented.

Besides, an emulator without good MSX1 emulation should not be a complete emulator because some (old) games or (old and new) demos work good only on a MSX1 machine

But you can also say the same for Turbo-R : that's why many people have asked Turbo-R support in blueMSX (and this will be reality in the future)

So, that's not a good idea to oppose MSX1 and MSX2, all MSX models are in the great MSX family, with, for 99% MSX1 software, total compatibility on a MSX2 (and higher). And personnally, I prefer to play a MSX1 game on a MSX2 machine, because the MSX2 palette of colors is better !

One Chip MSX - When I was in Japan in November 2003, I had a short chat with Nishi about the One Chip MSX. The project is still a on his mind a lot. In a positive way As said in Tilburg 2001 though, the other MSX Revival projects (Magazine, EGG, MSXPC, Game Reader) have to create the funds needed for developing the One Chip MSX.

It doesn't mean that the non-official (and mostly freeware) MSX Revival is not interesting ... but if a new machine, based on the MSX spirit and the Linux freedom, becomes reality, it will be the start of another passionate story in a very different context ! And probably, the name of this machine won't be MSX3, but a new and original trademark ...

So, if you read between the lines of my thoughts, probably some day the ways of the official and non-official MSX Revivals could be merged, but only if there are common interests in creativity, freedom and also money, because it's part of the reality...

It seems to me some people are focussed too much on one MSX generation!
Personally I've programmed for low-spec MSX2, MSX turboR, Gfx9000 and MoonSound, but I've coded MSX1 stuff too. And I will continue to code for the entire MSX spectrum, from low to high.

This MSX1-fanaticism is really getting annoying!

I agree with MaSaXi, but I see it all from a less dramatic point of view. For me, MSX is just MSX1. And I have writting down that 1, because it was not specified in the original. MSX means FIRST GENERATION. If you talk about higher generations, please indicate it.

As for hobbyist hardware developments, Gfx9000 and MoonSound work fine on MSX1.

As for official Japanese revival stuff:
- MSXPLAYer emulates MSX1 with the real MSX1 palette, and many of the games rereleased are MSX1 games.
- MSX Game Reader supports MSX1 cartridges too.
- ESE's MSX FPGA project started by implementing MSX1.

There is no special support for any MSX generation in the MSX revival, and in fact, in my opinion the MSX turboR is less supported than MSX1.

MSX was and is still ahead in time.
The MSX was a game computer and a personal computer in one.
Now we have a PC for a personal thingy and a console, like ps2 or xbox, for the gaming part. Sure you can play games on the PC, but you have to start all sorts of software and install all sorts of things.
With the MSX you put a cartidge into the slot and voila you can play.
And in the future all things will go back to one device. And that was exactly what a MSX in, multiple devices in one package

Thats why I think that if they would make a MSX3 it will be a great success.

I guess for some people MSX is all about MSX-1. For others, like myself, who started on MSX-2 with Turbo Pascal 3 and games like Metal Gear and Vampire Killer, MSX-1 looks like a trimmed down MSX-2 - not much to rave around...

For me, programming for MSX-1 is only interesting as an excersise in minimalizm.

I do agree, however, that mid-90s periferials (GFX9000 and MoonSound) don't make any sence for most of MSX users. I think there still about 5 thousands of MSX 1/2 users around the world, but only may be 500 or so have GFX9000 and/or MoonSound. Making software exclusively for this devices cuts out ~4500 people, which is dumb for programmer, unless he/she is doing this for a share in msx.ch profits.

Not programming for x86 PC cuts out ~4.500.000 people.

BTW, I think 5000 MSX users is very much on the negative side ^^;

Not supporting new MSX generations and/or new peripheral devices stops progress!
