I'm still working on it, tho a little less active... Currently I'm working on the scripting language of the engine. I guess this is really the most important part. If I screw this up, the whole enigine will suffer. It needs to be flexible enough to allow all sorts of actions/animations and fast enough to not slow everything down. It will probably be very complex though..... This is not so nice for the end-user, but I can't spend too much time on this either...

You could decide to make a less complex intermediate language and create tooling to convert that language to your internal language. For the intermediate language you could use modern technology (think e.g. xml). |

Perhaps some interested RPG ppl could sit together @ Bussum for a while (in one of those empty classrooms orso) and discuss things..

Well, the problem isn't really the way the language is coded, but more what it will allow... There's a number of things I need to weigh, being my piece of mind and that of the end-user....
For me it would be ideal to have the end user do everything. It would make my engine very fast, and would also pose less of a problem while making it. To open a door for instance, I could have the user modify the map, the walk map and the animation map in the event code. This would work like a charm for me, but is hardly user-friendly...
So then you come to the desicion of implementing a door system. This means I'll have to remember the state of each door. But also how high it is, how wide it is, I'll have to store the cell-pattern of each of the three layers, I'll have to see if it's an animated door, how many frames it is, how many fps the animation is, if there's a sound connected to this event, etc, etc, etc... And that's just for opening the door. The darn thing may also close afterwards! Does the animation just reverse? Is it a different animation? Blah, blah, blah...
It's really a pain in the ass, because God forbid you're so lame that you only use open/closed doors like Xak Gazzel did. This is an amateur production, so it'll have to be twice as good as anything Konami, Microcabin and Falcom could come up with. Thus my friend, you see the many problems I am faced with. If I try to do something nice for the end-user, it'll jump up and bite me in the ass... |

Well, all those details (the door-system etc.) are nice to think about and discuss.. I'm sure there're plenty o' other thingies that can be discussed.. why not simply discuss them here ..
