IIRC my MT-32 used to give an error during the start of IC/XAK-TOG. I think Sysex data was being sent a bit too quickly (or something like tgat). Can anyone verify if this is the case? If so, perhaps the CM32L could handle it all while the MT-32 couldn't.

| You need a turbo R GT midi, with preverably a Roland CM32L (MT32's bigger brother). I noticed that in Illusion City some effects were wrong on a MT32, but ok on a CM32L.
In XAK Gazzel only the intro demo contains MIDI musix whilst having beforementioned hardware and M pressed during boot.

That's REALLY weird, as the CM32L is an exact copy of the MT-32... with only a few pcm samples added (some soundeffects like thunderclaps, rain, carhonking etc) but those are hardly a reason to go for the non-lcd version of the MT-32
I've owned both a MT-32 and a CM32L and they sound exactly the same. It could be those sound effects I'm talking about are used in Illusion City, but the music should sound exactly the same.

There are effects in Illusion City's tunes, which won't be heard with an MT32. Indeed those additional samples.
edit: it was your ex cm32l which was used during the demonstration of Illusions in Tilburg 1997 |

Actually, there's one instrument that sounds different in the MT-32 and CM-32L (or at least in the CM-64 I tried). Unfortunately that instrument is used quite often in the IC songs. IIRC, it's the Tube Bell, and it actually sounds better on the MT-32 than on the CM-64L (that is, if you leave out the extra noise it generates, and the loss of the sfx ) |

so, what we really need is a MIDI patcher, an MT-32 and a CM-64 to create the 'ultimate Illusion City MIDI experience' ? |

No, it was I who bought it from you. I had it for almost 2 years and then sold it at the fair in Tilburg (without a loss ). I've never been to the Interexpo fair so I don't think you sold it there to me. Probably at a fair at Tilbirg or Zandvoort. |

At the beginning of the Illusion City Intro (where the plane thingie goes through the clouds) The MT32 MIDI music sounds very awful. The percussion-like instruments sounds very "vals". Is this a MT32 problem as well?

"vals" = out of tune

No, it's just the way the music was made vs the way MIDI works. Microcabin doesn't make simple melodic music which will sound well on any instrument, but relies heavily on specialized voices and sound effects. This doesn't work on MIDI. Especially since with MIDI (whatever standard) a 'piano' can be anything ranging from something that really doesn't sound like a piano at all to something that still doesn't sound much like a piano... Hence the MT32 'only' part, which is essence is a very un-MIDI demand to make... |
