It's been a long time since we heard about Uzix. I was wondering if the project is still being maintained and if new releases are planned for the new future. I'm looking forward to playing around with new versions of ZICA, a GUI and more. (I'd love to see an optimized UZIX with a GFX9000 GUI one day ^_^)... |

It's a sourceforge project, no ?
Everybody can contribute in its development then...
On http://uzix.sf.net , you can see that there was a new 0.2.1 alpha release in september 2003, so maybe the project was abandoned, but anybody can pick it up where it left off. |

Don't expect a GUI for Uzix. With V9938/V9958 is not possible at all (the GUI test Adriano made became too slow, no way to have multiple terminals on screen + mouse, etc plus multitasking at a decent speed). As for V9990 Adriano cannot see if it's possible or not without having one
A shell otherwise may be possible... but not a GUI.
Last time I spoke with him, UZIX development was still going on, but on a very slow basis, since he had other priorities... |

... like translating Illusion City, which is also a respectful job |

I totally agree with that, but I do consider the UZIX project to be very interesting, important and respecful as well. I hope more developers join the development to do some serious ASM optimizations, support the GFX9000 and Obsonet, ... (wishful thinking?)

All the code that should be written in ASM for UZIX is written in ASM. Of course it could be a bit faster if it was entirely written in ASM, but... No, it's too much work for too little gain for a single maintainer.

After a lot of work, many headaches, remote debugging and not much feedback (I mean: too much work for too little gain) to make UZIX accessing Novaxis, Bert and MegaSCSI interfaces, I decided to not develop anything for a hardware I don't have. It's very frustrating when you develop something, it keeps crashing just because you can't debug it (you can just imagine what's wrong and do lots of trial-and-error) and worse at all: you can't see it running. Developing UZIX kernel itself, IDE direct access, TCP/IP stack and applications and dual-head support for UZIX was much more fun (and in some cases, faster).

Its was not abandoned. I'm working on it, but on a VERY slow basis. It's just that working on IC is more funny nowadays. |

Sure. I know Paulo Maluf personally, he's a nice guy. If you don't mind (since I don't know which e-mail address to use for sending you a message, sunrise), contact me by e-mail: adrianoATuzixDOTorg. |
