I checked out SVGAMSX... It's a very unknown emulator indeed. This is some output:
SvgaMSX by John Beuving 2000
Usage: svgamsx [-option] [filename1] [filename2]
-help - Print this help page
-diska <filename> - Set disk image used for drive A: [DRIVEA.DSK]
-diskb <filename> - Set disk image used for drive B: [DRIVEB.DSK]
-sync <frequency> - Sync screen updates to <frequency> [0]
Keyboard bindings:
[F8] - MENU
[F11] - Screenshot
It seems to be an fMSX clone with video output for SVGAlib.
No source code can be found on the net... |

Interesting finding, manuel
I didn't know this emulator, but with the description above, I presume that it runs under MS-DOS (I'll check that), so it must be counted in this quiz !
I can say already say that there will be another surprises when I'll give the complete list : some emulators have never been presented on MRC |

Is that such a great shame? If you really wanted we reported about them, you could have sent a notification of it, now couldn't you?

Indeed, in order to bring MSX news we depend on
A) People developing new MSX (related) stuff
B) People letting us know about that
I know we try to find a lot of news ourselves, but if you want to make sure that something you created (or people you know created, or something you just spotted) is mentioned on the MRC send in a news submit. That's what it's there for |

Should we count all versions of fMSX for Windows (I mean, the same version of fmsx source with just display drivers and gui written by different guys) ?
I personally remember one written by some japanese guy (v 1.5 was the latest), then Marat wrote his own version, but I am sure there were more of them - everyone tried to create his own free version...
I also know about at least 3 fmsx-dos programs: one by Marcel de Kogel, one by some russian (if I am not mistaken, this gave Marcel the the push to create his own variant) and one more by Marat Fayzullin himself, distributed together with Windows version.
Also there were more versions of fmsx for DOS - I remember some version done by koreans, featuring direct floppy access, etc.
So, we cannot count all the fmsx clones - and there is no need for it.
On Unix, nobody counts original fmsx and the same fmsx with advanced screen drivers by Arnold Metselaar or by Shigeki Itoh as two different programs (not speaking about flavors of Unix...)
For example, my friend compiled fMSX on Linux with svga libraries maybe 5 or 6 years ago, should I list it as "Linux MSX emulator" ?

VisualMSX == NLMSX w/ Windows front-end. Does that count as well?

cax: fMSX-DOS already implemented direct disk access. And it works brilliantly |

Why do you think that?
The original announcement on MRC only talks about Linux. Besides, I could only find a binary for Linux and no source code. So I guess no one could even try to compile it for DOS.
What's the difference between DOS and WIndows btw, for non-NT-derived M$ operating systems?
I guess that most emulators for MS-DOS also run on MS WIndows... Not vice versa of course. How to count? |

Hmmm...
I would have to check this, but I think I still have the sourcecodes of svgamsx around here somewhere... But, I will only go look if anyone is actually interested in it |

No, a front-end gives generally only comfort on Windows for a DOS-based emulator.
Case of VisualMSX is amazing : it gives more comfort for a Windows-based emulator, and that's a good thing for gamers, because the interface of NLMSX is not really intuitive |

The problem concerns especially a Korean emulator that was never announced on MRC and that I've discovered only in 2004. As the development of this emulator seems to be stopped since 1 or 2 years, it had no sense to make a report to MRC.
I guess that you will use now Google to find it ! |

If there's no MS-DOS or Windows version, this emulator can't count for the quiz.
All DOS-based emulators can run in Win 3.1, Win95 et Win98 (and probably also 2000). In some rare cases, you must absolutely go in pure DOS mode (it's the case of CJSMSX) or you will get bad display, because based on very old videocard (it's the case of MSX4PC)
With WinXP, it becomes more complex because XP is more based on NT and has at the same time a special feature : you can "emulate" an old version of Win in WinXP (only 95,98,NT4,2000 ... not 3.1) or try to use the "fake" DOS of XP. Some old emulators will have problems with XP, because the technology is now very different.
How to count ? You count only one time the same emulator that runs on DOS and on Windows; you count two emulators if there's a special-DOS version ans a special-Windows version of the same emulator. |

From my point of view, you have there different emulators with specific features, even if they are all fMSX clones. So, you must count each apart.
Btw, I didn't knew that there was a fMSX-DOS Russian ! One more emulator ! |
