Hi!

I don't know if this is the right place, but I prefer to talk about it here.

I have experienced some problems using openMSX. The emulator itself is perfect, but I think that some of the specified machines aren't properly configured:

-PHILIPS VG-8020: in the implementation of this machine, openMSX considers that this computer has a memory mapper and only 64 KB. I know that this has been discussed in the past, but until now I have never found any VG-8020 with a mapper, and I owe 4. Perhaps it would be good to include the "mapped version" and "unmapped version" (64 KB RAM in third slot).

-SANYO MPC-100: again, a memory mapper problem. I owe 2 and they have 64 KB of RAM in the third slot, while openMSX says that the RAM is in the second slot. Maybe also different models exist!

Any idea?

By the way, I want to thank the openMSX team for their excellent work. It is now the only emulator that I use, and the WAV support is excellent: 100% MSX compliant!

Regards,

Edward Robsy

Ouch. I have visited the SourceForge place and then decided to send them a more detailed e-mail. Anyway, have you experienced any problems with this emulator? It is excellent!

I have just checked the Philips VG-8020 configuration file, but it has not a memory mapper. Just 64kB plain RAM in slot 3-2.

Also the Toshiba HX-10 has plain 64kB RAM in slot 2 in openMSX. Possibly the RAM is in the wrong slot. Can someone check this on his real Toshiba HX-10 to verify pitpan's situation?

Note that this is not a problem in openMSX itself, but only the configuration files. Maybe a better topic for the thread would be "Machine specs" or something...

No, it's correct. There are even two Toshiba games on tape that were especially developed for this computer that has RAM in slot 2 : Break Out! and Checkmate!

These games can't be runned on MSX machines with RAM in slot 3.

Hey! I was talking about the SANYO MPC-100. It should have the RAM in slot 3 and not in slot 2.

About the Philips VG-8020, if the RAM is in slot 3-2, that means an expanded slot system. In my experience, I have never found it in the real machine. My 4 Philips VG-8020 only have 64 KB of RAM in main slot 3, without subslots.

ARGH! Sorry about the Toshiba/Sanyo thing!

There is normal RAM in slot 2 indeed. I also have an MPC-100, I'll check where the RAM is. SOmeone else can conform this?

I had a VG-8020 that had expanded slot 3. That's why you needed to type POKE -1,170 to get some software working.... Maybe we should make 2 configs indeed...
Do you have the /00 version?

Yes, it is the /00 version, with no expanded slots at all.

The MPC100 that I owe is the brittish model: RAM in page 3. The same goes also for SANYO MPC64 and SANYO MPC200 MSX1 computers, very similar machines.

I used to have an MPC100 years ago. This was a UK model (including pound key), which was sold in Holland. AFAIK it has the RAM in slot 3.

The VG8020/00 version is on the outside identical to later version VG8020/20. Internally not: the /00 is build like a traditional MSX-1 computer with separate chips, later versions use the S3527 MSX engine. The /00 has no mapper, the /20 has 64K in a mapper provided by the S3527.

Does the VG8020/20 Main ROM also contain code to initialize the memory mapper banks? It's the first time I read/hear about an MSX1 computer having a memory mapper.

Hmm, I thought the 8020/20 didn't have a mapper, but just 64k in an expanded slot: 3-2. (I.e.: you need POKE -1,170 to select it for some software....) Oh, I already said this earlier, I see...

There are MSX1 machines with a mapper, though: an example is the Yamaha CX-5MII/128. 128kB mapper.

You are right, the 64K is in a expanded slot but not in a mapper.
