Hi! Excuse me for my english.
I have much old game for msx in cassette and I would like to save them in my PC and play with them by emulator. But I don't know how can I do!
I can try to take the "sound" of cassette with Nero and transform it in waw or mp3, but then?
Thanks
R4gtl

There's a number of emulators that can play that WAV file directly. There is also a couple of utilities that can convert a .WAV file to a .CAS file that other emulators use. Just check if your favorite emulator has a WAV as CAS feature, and if not use a utility like WAV2CAS.

Thank you very much!
I've try to make a .CAS file with WAV2CAS and it's all right.
But...Sorry! I don't know how to use that CAS file! I've try with fmsx-dos and with rumsx but I cannot see my old games. Please explain me to use .CAS file with fmsx-dos or rumsx.
Thank you

r4gtl:
It's very simple - you have to open the .cas file first
(in rumsx you have a special button for it - imagine you insert the cassette into the tape connected to MSX)
then use emulator in the same way you were using your cassette on MSX - use either bload, cload or load command to load the game from cas file into emulated MSX.

Perhaps you could also take a look at some of the newer emulators. If you have a fast PC, try openMSX and blueMSX which are both very good. If your PC is a little slower, usually NLMSX is the best choise. In any event, these emulators are probably a bit more accurate with sound and display and are also quite easy to use.

Now I've tried. I'd create a new .CAS file and I call him"Piramide". Then I restart RUMSX and I put Piramide File in the tape drive. Then I write in the prompt
BLOAD"CAS:",R
and he tell me Device I/O error
I remember that the name of this game was Piramy and so I try with
BLOAD"PIRAMY:",R
and he tell me Bad file name
Excuse me but I Don't understand.
Can you explain me step by step?

1) first of all, maybe your piramide.cas is just not ok.
2) BLOAD"PIRAMY:",R
This is wrong syntax - BASIC thinks "PIRAMY:" is a device, like "cas:" or "mem:" or "grp:". Don't put ":" at the end.
3) try to use some emulator that can read directly from sound card
4) using search engines, you can find the mentioned game on the net as a rom file. If you think it's ok for you - go for it.

Ok! Now it seem somethings move in my brain. I've try to write bload"Piramy" but it tell me " Disk offline". What it means?

A thing that users forget with CAS files is the need to rewind the tape

In RuMSX, there's a button to rewind the tape (to use before the loading instruction BLOAD"CAS:",R in the case of the above mentioned game)

In blueMSX, there's even an automatic rewind feature that can be enabled or disabled

A remark about the CAS format : not all WAV tape files can be converted into the CAS format, as this format has some limitations, but Martos is working on tools to improve the working of the CAS format

Sonic, these advices are good, but for the CAS format, NLMSX is not a good choice, because this emulator doesn't support the tape files. It's on the very long 'To Do' list ....

I've downloaded with Rumsx the .CAS file that was in the same download. Now I'm trying to run that files in blueMsx. If I write RUN"CAS:" he tell me
found:START
direct statement in file
and stop

The files are 12 MGEAR001, MGEAR002...
I can't understand!
Excuse me!

These CAS files are special save files for the game Metal Gear. You can only use them with the game.

r4: either try BLOAD "CAS:",R or RUN "CAS:" the MGEAR filenames are indeed Metal Gear save files. Perhaps you've 'inserted' the wrong image in the emulator?

try

BLOAD"CAS:",R

or even better: emulate only an MSX1 computer.
It's better to use your WAV recording directly in e.g. openMSX.
