Hello all. I've never owned nor used an MSX before, but I recently gained interest in some of its games. I've installed fMSX--DOS (none of the Windows emulators will work on my PC for some reason). It loads up fine, the MSX logo flashes on the screen...and then it becomes what looks to me like a blue MS-DOS screen, which I'm assuming is what a normal MSX screen looks like. As I said before, I've never used an MSX before, so I tried to load the game by typing in c:\msx\mg\metalgear.rom (the location of the ROM on my hard drive) and then pressing 'Enter'. It said 'Syntax Error'. I tried typing 'Load' first, then typed out the location of the rom again. Syntax Error. Can someone please tell me how to load roms?

How about reading the manual of the emulator?
Are you sure that openMSX or blueMSX also don't work on your computer? fMSX-dos is ancient.

What version of windows do you use? What CPU are you operating. Manuel quite correctly states that fMSX-dos is ancient - but as i recall it does work very well - i used to use it all the time on my DOS based 286

Memnon, put the rom in the same directory as fmsx-dos.exe.
If it still does not work your rom image is corrupted.

so command line should look like :
fmsx-dos -msx2 -ifreq 60 mgear.rom

for sound you need your old soundcard or a dos supporting soundcard,
adlib , soundblaster (pro/awe32) , gus and even internal speaker!
fmsx-dos should detect one of these.
