I think the quality of a sound chip can not only be measured by the specs. Especially not on a system like MSX. I am as well surprised by the results, but I didn't expect the OPL4 to win hands down either.

I expected SCC to win. This soundchip (together with PSG) 'breaths' the MSX feeling more than any other soundchip.And I also believe there are quite some msx.org visitors who don't have experience with the OPL4, so logically, they choose something else...

hmmm... moonsound is a nice soundchip, but just that: nice. it's not pure MSX, it's overrated, and not a lot of people have it... should explain the score For me, I like the SCC a lot better, since it represents MSX sound more than anything else (yeah, even FM-Pac!)...My list would be like this 1) SCC, 2) MSX-Audio, 3) MoonSound, 4) FM-Pac, 5) PSG

If I was to say what respresent the MSX sound best, I would say PSG. All the other stuff is add on! It isn't the original stuff! Moonsound isn't even made in the eighties !

Well, saying one is the best doesn't mean the others are bad, does it. I like all the soundchips for MSX, but all of them have their ups and downs..To me the downs of all these chips are...PSG - only 3 channels, I only know one tracker for it. SCC - Not really meant as a soundcard to be used apart from the Konami games. The trackers aren't easy to use, but the SCC has a very distinctive sound which makes it very interesting.FM-PAC - The hardware limitation of only being able to us

For my part, I think that one option is missing in this poll: MSX-STEREO by the combination of MSX-AUDIO and MSX-MUSIC (and the lucky ones in the MSX world can replace one of these chips by the Moonsound card !).This is really the best music option for MSX. PSG and SCC(+) sounds are too restrictive, although the SCC sounds can be very surprising !

Yeah, well.. then we could also have added the PSG+FM-PAC option, the very powerful PSG + SCC + FMPAC option (Musica) or the extremely powerful yet little used 2x MSX-AUDIO, 1x MSX-MUSIC, 4xSCC and 1xPSG option of SME3.Maybe that's something for the next poll ? Lets have a look on how the chips do on their own first. (btw poll suggestions are always welcome)

hmmm... MSX-stereo shouldn't really be in the poll... I've composed for a lot of games, and have never considered MSX-stereo to be a big improvement. In stead I focused on MSX-audio, did a bit of MSX-music, and neglected MSX-stereo Besides, I don't know a lot of products that actually make good use of MSX-stereo, in most cases they just use the combo of playing Audio and Music together...

IMO OPL4 0wnz all those chips!1. OPL4 has the same capabilities as MSX-MUSIC and more, it can be made to sound 100% like MSX-MUSIC.2. OPL4 is 100% compatible with OPL1 (MSX-AUDIO) and can play higher quality samples than MSX-AUDIO.3. OPL4 is also very capable of emulating SCC, although you will have to put some noise in it, because OPL4 has so much better D/A converters.And about PSG, yeah well... You could emulate it on OPL4 too, but then again even an SCC can emulate PSG :

Mark, OPL4 can do brightness control just as MSX-AUDIO or MSX-MUSIC can. It's just that Moonblaster does not take advantage of the full features OPL4 has to offer. Ofcourse you are right that it can't be done with samples, but who needs samples if you have a FM synth as advanced as the OPL4 isIn my opinion samples are WAY overrated. With some good FM voices you can often create the same effects with much more versatility. FM voices can be created, but samples have to be found, ripped or sampled from

(hehe.. full moon.. hehehe.. shut up beavis!!!).Back 2 serious mode: The sources are there, the moonsounds are there, the demand is there...
