Amazing! I inserted a Yamaha V9938 in my Zemmix MSX2 and IT DIDN'T WORK!
Does it use a v9948?
I put the old one back and it worked again..
I was a bit scared when I started it and the screen remained black I had also done other work.. /me got all warm and fuzzy inside

I googled for V9948 and found:
v9948 - apparantly a VDP dedicated to the Korean market, which
added another text mode specifically for use with the Korean character set.

AHA!! Figures They should be compatible anyway though.. Stupid Yamaha men in black. This also probably means I cannot put the V9948 into an MSX2 and check the secret text mode eighter (who needs this text mode on a Zemmix anyway!? I mean, you CAN add a keyboard, but COME ON!)

Yes, it's the secret dream of the MSX fans : add the screen 9 in a MSX2 !

But there are other hard works like inventing a Korean MSX2+ or Turbo-R. Imagine the full madness
ALL the MSX screens in such a machine !!!! But is it possible ???

By the way, the V9948 is a mysterious chip and the screen 9 is a variant of screen 6 that works actually like a text screen for smaller characters (what is adapted for the hangul characters)

More seriously, just compare the international characters with the hangul characters : 80 per line for the first category, 40 per line for the second category

So, it means that each hangul character needs 2 columns ....

Finally, a special screen 0 that combines simultaneously width40 and width80.
I don't think that it's only BIOS work. A different VDP was required !

Well, there's a couple of Kanji mode that do the same trick... Ofcourse there must be some difference idd, else it wouldn't be called a V9948... I'm still pretty curious as to how the mode works tho... Is it a genuine patternmode? Is there even any data on it?

And if it is just a simple pattern-mode, why did Konami buy it?

If you get Daewoo CPC-400S ROMs, you can test SCREEN 9 on OpenMSX.
