Seriously, I don’t like the whole ‘we’re doing this all for you, and all we get is flames in return, poor us’ act.

Why not be constructive instead? Code a nice search script and send it in... I'm sure it'd be appreciated more than derogatory remarks |

You're right... We're doing this all for ourselves... It's what keeps our sad-ass lives remotely interresting... Not to mention all the money we make... I almost forgot! |

Do it yourself. It’s not my site. Since when can’t I tell what’s wrong without being called a meanie or to fix it myself?
Oh, and this is what I get when I’m being constructive: http://www.msx.org/forumtopic3642.html
Besides, I DID suggest Google. And I mean that. Please, use Google.

Did I say money? Clearly you didn’t understand me. What I mean is: please don’t victimise yourselves. I hate it, especially when I’m suddenly the bad guy.

Stop the nonsense! Grauw, you're a tid bit overreacting I think. And Sonic, please don't feed the FUD... We've got enough people doing that already
Let's get back at what this topic was about. The TS asked for some extra options in the searchfunction. Some people spoke their minds about the search in general. Snout got frustrated.
Until here; all reasonable. But the total utterless crap following that doesn't make the search a single bit better at all... And I'm not pointing fingers to anyone in specific here
Let's kiss, RNIFF and give Snout some time to figure out a solution. Until then; thanks for the patience. Google is suggested, and that's a good alternative until the searchfunction is revised. Thanks for that suggestion.
To complete this post with some constructive and helpful stuff: for all Google illiterates, use "site:" to search msx.org only.
e.g.: "site:www.msx.org RNIFF" should result in all pages on the www.msx.org domain on which RNIFF is mentioned. |

What can I say, I got a headache . Anyways, I think you can maybe understand why I wasn’t entirely happy for being critisised on my posting. |

I can, and I can also understand Snout's frustration.... So let's all RNIFF and try to be patient with eachother.. The world's crazy enough without us getting all worked up over eachothers posts.
Take some asperine and get some sleep Grauw, hope you feel better in the morning! |

Thx for that one, Bart... I was working on a looooong reply which probably wouldn't have made the discussion a lot more constructive.
As for Jazzy: Have you tried using double quotes ( " ) in your search query? Or -if you didn't find the topic yet- remember what the topic was about? Then we could help you find it after all.
About the search engine: At the time I wrote the current search engine the MRC had a lot less contents. The algorythm was fast and accurate enough to find about everything searched for. Now, things have changed quite a bit. As a result of that I have already started working on some internal improvements. It needs quite a bit of testing, but I'm working on a better search algorythm and a nicer way to output the results at the moment. Either way, as MRC is a hobby of mine (hehe, how many times have I stated this on the MRC during the past few months? ), I'd like to do those things in my own time, when I feel like it. When I'm done, I'm quite sure you'll like the improvements.
One last thing: The MRC team can't know that our visitors would like to see a section of the MRC improved unless people tell us so. Had you informed us about your unlucky search queries on the MRC before, I might have started on search-engine improvements a lot earlier as well. |

I have informed you now, haven’t I? I don’t need it solved today. And I don’t care enough about it to make a topic out of it, but if there’s one, sure, I’ll have my say.
I don’t see how me telling about my bad search engine experiences earlier would have created a different response. These kind of responses certainly don’t make me more eager to report any issues I have. So if you want stuff reported earlier: this is not helping. As a matter of fact, had I made a topic out of it, it would probably have ended up like the earlier mentioned topic about the shop. No offense (really!), but by now I should know that you guys just can’t take critisism. I need to remember that next time I post. Though I probably won’t, I guess.

p.s. what’s RNIFF anyway?

Running Naked in Fields of Flowers (you knew that didn't you?), but I think you'd better take that asperine We're not the best in taking critisism I guess, but maybe that's got something to do with the fact that's the only thing we do get... No one ever opened up a topic to thank Snout for taking the time to post x news items a day... Sure, that's what we chose for, and it's our hobby too. But we're all humans, and we all like to receive compliments better then we like to receive criticism.
Anyway; I think I made it clear we (all of us) should be respectful, patient and kind to eachother, so let's focus on the positive side here: how to improve the search-engine. |

By the way, while on the subject, I recreated the entire msx.org frontpage in CSS once. Pretty fair size reduction. Never used though... Not that I really mind, but, when there’s no guarantee something will be used, why should I put effort in it? Also, given my lack of knowledge about the backend msx.org uses, it isn’t even practically possible for me to code such a thing.

Bart, oh, sure, didn’t know the abbreviation. But really, saying that you only receive criticism and no compliments, you need to look better at the reactions on news posts and contests and whatever you guys do! And seeing people (virtually) smile and scream of happiness for a certain post, does that not count?
Anyways, hereby: thanks for all the news posts! Let’s just say that msx.org isn’t worthy of being among my RSS feeds because it is so terribly uninteresting to read! ^_^

I only learned about that recently btw. Anyway, due to that exact seem backend with pretty tight to some ugly stuff. Doing MRC enterily in CSS only would imply rebuilding the entire foundation of the MRC's backend/engine. You're not the only one who suggested this, and we're definitely are considering doing more stuff in CSS. But please keep in mind that suggesting things is exactly what it is "a suggestion". No guarantees of implementation of that suggestion can be given ofcourse. But that's no different from any other situation in life; suggesting does never imply implementing....
I don't think you could code a search engine without any knowledge of the backend/database whatsoever, trying so is practically impossible as you said. Nevertheless the suggestions you have made are appreciated and I for one would be disappointed if you wouldn't suggest/criticise features or changes in the future...
