Actually I think, that originally MicroMusic came with such a tool and not with musics.

I hope not, 'cause I already started coding! Mine didn't though, I bought mine on a fair and it came with the music already on disk...

afaik it never came with such a tool. I did suggest Frits Hilderink to make one for legal purposes...

Well, there is one now It should probably be in the downloads database later today, together with Micro Music, of course! I've only finished the 'rip-script' for Xak I though, but I'll try to create the rest of the scripts later this week.

hi!

I'm trying to play musics with Micro Music (the file that can be loaded from this web page) but I can't...
I type MEMMAN (install), then TL MMUSIC31.TSR (install again) I press select and shif and the menu appears, but all musics says OPENING ERROR and I can't load any music!

you should extract the music you want to play from Microcabin games first. Microrip, the program you can use to do this, is included in the package as well...

It is not "XAK2DATA.RIP" that is included in the file download?

No, the RIP file allows you to RIP the data... Just make a new disk(image), and put the MSX-DOS system files, MICRORIP.COM and all the RIP files on it. Then, if you want to rip Xak 2, type MICRORIP XAK2DATA on the MSXDOS prompt. Follow all the instructions, and it makes the DAT file MicroMusic needs. If you have disk images on of Xak2 on the PC, you can also use an emulator to do this; it will be a lot faster. If you're using real hardware it also works, but don't forget to WRITE PROTECT your original disks just in case... (Don't write protect the disk you want to write the data file to tho ) You can repeat this process by the way, for all the MicroCabin games you have. The only RIP files that are still missing are the files for Fray and Tower of Cabin, I'll see if I've got time to make those later this week. There is more info on MicroRip in the MICRORIP.TXT file that was included in MICRORIP.LZH.

The whole problem with Micro Music not being in any freeware database was because of the DAT files that come with it. Those files contain the music data copyrighted by Micro Cabin and Sonic made that riptool to make those data files. That way it's possible to have it added to a freeware database without infriging copyrights. This way you need to have the games you want to get the music from.

So the music driver was coded from scratch and not ripped from a Micro Cabin game? Just to know it....

I think Frits did rip it from one of the Micro Cabin games and 'redone' it with a disassembler, but the only person who can really answer that question is Frits himself.

Those are the kind of questions we're trying to avoid here!

I didn't actually check it... It may still has some Micro Cabin code, I don't know. From what heard back then, he completely re-wrote it indeed. Logic would suggest that just ripping the player won't do, since it had to be DOS2 and MEMMAN compatible. I just went with the text in the info screen of Micro Music, where it says that the replayer was made by Frits Hilderink... Who am I to doubt this?

I'm still working on Tower of Cabin and Fray, but they don't seem to be as easy as the other games. Fray may perhaps be possible, but at least Tower of Cabin won't work with the current version of MicroRip, which assumes songs start at the beginning of a sector. I'll probably have to make a separate utility for that one...

Well, I have a quick look at it and it is similar to any Micro Cabin music driver (indeed, pretty similar to The Tower of Cabin), but reallocated to other memory area.

> Logic would suggest that just ripping the player won't do, since it had to be DOS2 and MEMMAN compatible.

I think it should work with any modification. I made a Micro Cabin music player several years ago, which is DOS2 resident, and it didn't need any modification. Don't know about MEMMAN. I just ripped it from Illusion City and made the DOS / DOS2 rutines needed for loading, playing, etc. You can find it on my web with some musics (is it illegal to say this?)
