MSX Drawing course?

Hi all! As I actually just started doing some more CG again, I was thinking it might be nice to create some tut on drawing a MSX anime character. Any ideas to get this going would make me very happy!

So, if you think you want to learn some CG skills, answer to my call!

FIRST... I want to see some sketches from you guys/girls to get started. Maybe poses, maybe MSX cover art. It doesn't matter if you can draw, because the information will follow that you:

- Receive drawing tips
- Learn to ink digitally
- Color the art

Any questions?

What you will need to follow up the tut is: Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator and a drawing tablet. For people who actually just start using a tablet a scanner is also needed to sketch on paper...

Thanks Snout, this will be fun! I think you guys must have read my MCCM pixeling course in the past years for SOOO MANY TIMES... Hahaha.. Let's follow this up with a CG TUT, a little example of what you can create with the following info: www.club-3d.com/distri/images/wallpaper/wallpaper_may_05.jpg

All the materials during the creation will be downloadable. Like sketches, lineart and color art. A donation to all MSX lovers anno 2005.

I'm not the best drawer, I'm not a professional, but that's easier for everybody to catch up, so get me some materials to start working with. ^_^

ok... here's n1cole k1dman, mangafied with my bezier-tool, from the filmposter of The Stepford Wives... fill 'r up

you may reshape the nose, since it sux.. kinda sux to have a cartoon-nose drawn at this front-angle.. before you know it you'll end-up with a muppet-nose (got some tips on that btw?)

Oh, and stick to screen5 colors, 16 max ^_^ .. hm.. you may as well rescale it to make it fit 256x212 orso (keep 1:1 AR whenever possibe!)..

Make green hairs! And fix whatever you think need fixing .. like making the pupils really round.. it sux to make circles with 2 beziers

'ave fun ^_^

I'll get back to you on that one. In the mean time, please take a look at my penguin collection.

Is Gimp ok, too?

I already got one question: I can draw and pixel whatever I like, as long as the image is big enough. The challenge lies in the limitation: how do I create a decent looking character in say 16x32 pixels?

Nice example Wolf, just checked it for a couple of times, maybe I have to get you guys first into basic anime skills. I will upload soon some sketches of my way of drawing anime style. For the nose, I have to say that you are doing too much details here. Eyes are too high, but that's logical when you take a real human head for the example. I will get my stuff ready to do some instruction sketches. Also how to draw anime out of a normal photographic pose/image.

I like the penguin! It shows that you already have the skills of coloring and drawing, but I actually never heard of Gimp...

Quoting the The GIMP:

The GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages.

It's very similar to programs like Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro, but free.

Okay, that's cool. I actually started Photoshop 4 years back now, it's still running! ^_^

I think I can do some example now of a pose. Does anybody have a nice pose image? I rather have a real picture of a neat womans pose. Maybe some beach girl? I want to have the full body, so I can show you an anatomy example.

Could you send me an email?

You can use the free (GPL) Inkscape as an alternative for Illustrator.
The Gimp is a great package for web and msx graphics.

my problem; I usually use Paint Shop Pro, and either mouse or scanned drawings. I'm not good, but I draw occasionally. My coloring skills are rather limited too
oh, and don't start about anatomy. I prefer comic look

Hi ARTRAG, I have received your email. But the weather here is so freakin hot that I'm cooking at the attic... But I can also do animations. The only problem is that I do not have the time to pixel a game now. I'm currently working hard to get multiple websites up and running, but if you need advise of an eye to the work it's always possible. Near this I do not really have my MSX machines hooked up...

Okay, so, Gimp and Inkscape... I will try these out for sure!

Hi Samor, not bad at all! If I see other anime sites with what people post, you are above average! Still I see that you could use some help on inking in illustrator, as you have used paintshop to ink, would look the same in photoshop. Near this you can color using multiple layers already. Did you ever try working with PhotoShop?

Thanks
I never really used photoshop, tried it very briefly, but I had trouble finding the right options, and as I kinda know what to do in Paint shop pro, so far I've been reluctant to switch, but I'm aware that one can achieve much more with Photoshop.

Hi everyone

Could anyone give me the names of good programs for animating sprites?

I have found online some examples of sprites ripped by different games for various platforms (PC, Gameboy ,Dreamcast, etc.)
but I need to process them in order to
1) reduce the number of colours
2) reduce the dimensions
3) reduce the number of animation frames
I have UleadGif animator (in trial): it seems good for file conversion (I can open animated gif and export
the frames) but very bad for editing, where I have no possibility of changing the colours or drawing details
PS
can I include pictures in my posts in this forum?
It could be nice to show you what I have found
Maybe someone could be interested in using those sprite and animations as well....

About the reduction and scaling and GIF support:
Well, photoshop does that...suppose if you want to change a couple of pictures with exactly the same thing,
you can make a batch file and process them with a number of effects. You can even tell photoshop to tell
where (from which folder) to get the files from, and save them in another folder...
so,suppose you want to scale, flip and add more blue to 30 animation frames, you can make all of it an automated task....
pulldowns: windows>actions then you get the actions menu.

HIt the round "play" button on the right of the tab, choose :NEW SET,give it a name, and then do NEW ACTION,
and the recording button is lit. From here on,every effect you apply, including scaling and a lot more, will be recorded as a batch action.
So you can safely experiment with this, and when you're satisfied press stop in the "action" window (where the record button is too)
Now the fun begins...choose the pulldown "file" (top of the screen left) and automate...fill in the name of the batch and apply the serttings
for opening and saving (SOURCE and DESTINATION) and process the whole thing.
