Afaik now Martos in focused on MSX tape games preservation... in spain there are quite a number of people working hard in order to get all those old cassette games on a digital format. The good thing is that a lot of forgotten games are appearing again, and now we can easily get games such as North and South, Chichén Itzá, Mystical, Wec Le Mans or Chase HQ... just search for CINTA MSX PRESERVACION on emule and you'll get a bunch of WAVs with MSX tapes, and {mod: link deleted}you will find a link of Martos' website, full of downloadable CAS files (hope a link that contains a link to a site with game downloads won't be deleted).

{mod: unfortunately it will, policies and such}

Ah, it seems you can also easily convert tapes yourself using that util, tape2cas.
That's nice, as I got a bunch of tapes over ebay a while ago. They're not worth much (unlike carts), but I like ém, and I think it's a great idea to preserve them in digital format.

That way you can always reproduce them too; I did this for a C64 I got - I converted some T64 and TAP games back to Tape, and yup, ran on the machine itself just fine.

That sure is another way to describe blatant stealing, cracking and distribution of cracked software ROFL !

Well, MSX tapes become unreadable in time. I do believe it's a good thing we try to preserve them in digital formats. As far as I'm concerned, nothing wrong with that

I don't think there's anything wrong with the preservation of software in general, as long as you preserve the software you own (or distribute the software needed for preservation) for your own use. Distributing the images you created of copyrighted tapes (or disks, or ROMs for that matter) does not become more or less legal with good intentions however, and linking to such images still is against our policies.

That's true. But the idea of preserving old cassette games is a good idea. I understand it's often used as a cover up for illegal activities, though. To make my point a bit more clear, legal preservation would be very welcome.

Sure it's better to get those tapes lose and forgotten for future generations... grunt, whatever you say, no matter... the thing is that you are right with your policies and legal thoughts about this PRESERVATION thing, but sometimes I wonder if there is at least a little tiny piece of nostalgia inside the MRC about the MSX system or what...

viejo: of course there is, otherwise we wouldn't even be making this website. Our policies on copyrighted material are this 'tight' because we don't want to put (the contents of) our own website at stake. We had some run-ins in the past over somewhat light matters, we're not looking forward to such situations to arise again. Besides, you probably are aware of the fact that the MSX Revival involves several legal initiatives that aim to preserve MSX software.

Yes, snout, I'm agree with you in that... but how could I play Sega's "Power Drift" for MSX ever if someone doesn't preserve that oldie good tape and distribute it online?. It's utopic to think that Sega joined with Activision will republish their games online!. These games will be probably lost without the work of people who digitalize it!.

viejo: how do you know if it's utopic? It also seemed utopic for Falcom, Microcabin, T&E and Aiky (just to name a few) to distribute their software online as well. Just because it takes a long time to get them there doesn't mean it will never happen.

If you choose to get your preserved software by non-legal means in the mean time, then that's your choice. All we're asking is not to ask for it or promote it in any way at the MRC forums, that's all
