A simple question:
Ascii wants 5000 preorders of the One Chip MSX to make it. So if it is achieved, there will be only 5000 units in the market and the people that have not preordered it will not be able to get one?

From an economically point of view, I'd say, they cross their break-even point if they sell 5000... Everything beneath that would make them loose cash, which is commercially not affordable...

I recon that once the 5000 are sold (*if*), there might come new series in the future, as long as there's demand from the customers (see the Sunrise hardware, which is still being made/sold if there are enough people who buy)...

But let them reach the 5000 hits first... It's quite a number...

its very expancive to hire a production line to produce 1 chip msxés.

since its based on smd to machines have to be programmed to produce those PCB's

yes; even with Bazix jumping in, it's gonna be hard. There's only so much media attention you're gonna get as a new company.

well... if one has faith in its product, one should invest and not wait for a number of orders to come in... If this would've happened to MSX in 1983 / 1984, there wouldn't have been an MSX in the first place...

That was a different marketing strategy... Look at the prices... They earned back the infestments with high prices... Later on they dropped...

ASCII probably reaches its break-even point when selling 5000 units at € 189,00 per device. It's perfectly understandable they want to make sure this project won't cost them money. And indeed, just as Manuel says, THAT's what it is all about. Every MSX lover should pre order the device and not wait until it comes on the market. Because if we all wait, the production won't even take place.

Unless ASCII is talking bullshit of course, just to scare us MSX-scene off and use these sentiments to sell shitloads of OCM's and get filthy rich

You can't compare this to the time of the first MSXes... Totally different market and goal.
