Hi!
I bought an old SVI 728 (MSX1) a while a go. It seems to work fine but i have one problem.
I cannot manage to load any software at all from my computer using an audio cable. I have tried Caslink, Microwaver, and premade Wave-files.
I type in BLOAD"CAS:",R and press the enter button on the msx and then play the sound, and NOTHING! I dont know how many times i've tried, but I always end up with nothing, the msx doesn't seem to respond at all.
Am i doin something wrong or is my msx broke? |

As far as I know, SVI is somewhat similar to, but isn't MSX!

not sure, but I thought the 728 was a fully compatible MSX1...

Alucard: have you tried playing with the volume of the output? Perhaps increasing it a *little* helps?

Can you save anything on a tape using the same cable? Maybe something wring with the cable?

I think that a friend of mine tried to make it record something to a cassette but connected it to a tv/computer instead (since i dom have a casette player) to see if something happend it did but the sound was VERY low.

I wonder if that cable works correctly? - the original datarecorder cables are different...

Check the cable, rise the volume.
A month ago, while debugging MicroWAVer, I discovered that standalone DVD player based on MTK chip (with all sound processing switched off) is the 100% realiable source for cassette port loading.
With souncard on my PC and my CD player I had bad luck most of the time
(maybe I have bad soundcard and CD player)
Good luck !

It can be the cable but i dont think so. I have a 5-pin din connector with a sepatate cable for each of the pins. I checked in the manual which one was the input-pin and connected the cable going from that pin to my pc.
Just like this, with the exception that my cable (cables) was bought this way (taken from the "cascable manual" :
{ 3
{ * ---------
{ 1 * * 2 / |------.----.---
{ / | | )
{ * * * | |------`----`---
{ | --- \ \ \
{ * * | / \ \ \___ Audio 1
{ | | \ \ (R)
{ | | \ \
{ View from pins | / \ \_____ Audio 2
{ side of connector ----- \ (L)
{ ---- \
{ 1 - CasIN --- \________ Ground
{ 2 - CasOUT -- ////////
{ 3 - Ground --
{
{
{To make a read-only cable (allows only uploading to MSX) you need to solder
{pin 3 of cassette connector to 'Ground' contact on audio jack and then to
{solder pin 1 of cassette connector to 'Audio 1' contact of audio jack. Keep
{all other pins untouched.
I think im gonna try to adjust the volume some more, or try a different audio source. |

Be sure to replay the sound as natural as it is. I mean, do not equalize it, let the replayer play the WAV files pure. So if you have some equalizer active on your replayer (or bass boost, or something), just DISABLE it. That helps a lot. Then play with the volume level until the MSX get the signal.
