Maybe more people would use the short link syntax more if it was actually listed in the tags.

Edwin: it's simply a matter of wrapping the URL in neat [ url ] [ / url ] tags, nothing more. Still, there are quite a lot of people who tend to forget this. Anyhow, an automated version (which adapts the links on-the-fly) is on the ToDo-list

say uhm.. for years I read about MRC-todo-lists already.. I've the impression a lot of -technically- small thingies are last in line, whereas one single giant-amoeba-feature is first in line.. wouldn't it be handy to spend a day on all the minor todos first, purely to get rid of them?

*cough* edit in frontpage-reactions *cough*

No it's not. That would be the long format that still leaves the entire url in the text. Which is actually shown in the tags list. I meant the short format with [ url = http:......... ] Short text [ / url ].

Just showing the complete syntax in the tag help would already be a large improvement, I think, and can't be more than 5 minutes work. Just change the current help text to:

"[ URL ] [ / URL ] - Add hyperlinks to your post, like this: [ URL = www.msx.org ] the MRC [ / URL ]"

Here - Now open that editor, copy, paste, upload, presto!

The long format is somewhat shorter than the short format!

I agree! Additionally, why not adding a link to the BBcode website for further information?
www.phpbb.com/phpBB/faq.php?mode=bbcode

For some people, there's a special problem with those short text links: If a blind person browses with braille display, a short text like ''here'' or ''this site'' might give to little information about the link or picture. (They might not be able to see the picture, but want to know something about the contence.) There are texts available how to design webpages for visually handicaped people.

Not unless you have a very effective short text generating AI on the shelf somewhere.

If but if you'd flip the definitions then the formatted version of the long format would be shorted than the formatted version of the short format. Which is kind of confusing.

See www.cs.kent.ac.uk/dept_info/documentation/publish/access_visual.html
and www.webbie.org.uk/papers/King-CWUAAT2004.htm to know more about.

Here's a citation of a part of the contents of the latter link illustrating what I said in my last post:

''A second obstacle to the use of webpages by blind people is the embedding of non-text content into HTML documents. The most obvious example of this is the use of images, used not only to present pictures and diagram graphics, but as a way to provide absolute layout of other components; headings and text with the size and font desired by the author; and decorative features such as borders and bullet points. Bitmap graphics contain no useful information for visually-impaired people: at best, the meaning of the image can be inferred from the filename (e.g. border.gif or cat.jpg). HTML does provide mechanisms for annotating this embedded content: the specification states that an author can set the ALT attribute of an embedded content element to describe the image as text or indicate that the content is of no value to a non-sighted user (e.g. an image used as a background spacing element). However, use of this attribute is not mandated by the HTML specification, and even if ALT text is provided, there is no guarantee that its information content is equivalent to the embedded content. ...''
