the 3DO indeed uses some MSX technology which panasonic had on shelf when they decided not to make a new msx after the GT.

And I found one of the sources: www.geocities.com/museo8bits/3do.htm in spanish but it isn't that hard to understand. It states also that there were 2 v9990's used.

yup, and unfortunately that's one big fat hoax. I believed in if for quite a while as well Just look at the inside of a 3DO, or at a 3DO emulator for that matter. Nothing even remotely close to a V9990 can be found inside.

Well.. Not everything can be brought back to have links to MSX, like some wants us to believe...

it says:

Screen
Governed by 2 Yamaha V9990 to 25 Mhz, (initially anticipated for the MSX3) with capacity to produce from 9 to 16 milones of pixels REAL per second, that accedes to the VRAM by own bus.
The resolution in screen is of 640 480 xs pixels. Nevertheless, internally it is of 320x240 (24 bits) or 320x480 (16 bits). Usually it is used the way of 16 bits for animations and the one of 24 for fixed bottoms. A interpolación with anti-alias is made to obtain the screen of 640x480.

The 3DO presents/displays the same ideal that the MSX: many manufacturers a single one estandar. And peculiarly, most of 3DO manufacturers they were it of MSX.
The design of must to 2 "gurus" of hard: Dave Needle and RJ Mical, Co-developer of the Amiga and the Atari Lynx. It is hoped with great espectación, because instead of a single bus, it is decided on a design of multiple bus (what, in theory, it allows multiple components to operate simultaneamente, with less problems of access to bus).

whaz up with that?

Well, you van also find this quote:

The closest analogy is that of the VCR; The VCR *technology* was
created by JVC, and any company can manufacture a VCR or VCR videocassettes
as long as they pay a small royalty to JVC. The 3DO *technology* was
created by the 3DO Company, and several companies have licensed the right
to manufacture 3DO systems based on this technology. The 3DO Company
itself does not manufacture 3DO systems.

Just send an e-mail to Panasonic

I tried but can't find a decent mailadres. I tried to mail with Panasonic Matsushita HQ because it doesn't make sens to mail a local Panasonic company.

You need to have a decent motivation for this , like I am writing a newspaper article on ... etc.. As it is 10+ years ago it might be quite hard for a company to find data back. Give it a try via the public relations department I would say.

That's very hard to say... you probably can't tell me either what kind of videoprocessor is actually used in the 3DO I think. It just could be 2 v9990's combined in the 26H4717 ic of the 3DO. Unless you can prove the opposite of the hoax it still isn't for 100% a hoax at this time

/me doesn't really know the 3DO, was it 3D? (real 3d, with filled/textured polygons etc.) If so, I hardly imagine it was our v9990 chip

Yep it was capable of real 3d... something like the Sega Saturn and first Sony Playstation. The 3DO was also equipped with two graphics accelerators besides the videoprocessor. These are their specs:

- 25Mhz clock rate.
- Capable of producing 9-16 million REAL pixels per second (36-64 Mpix/sec
interpolated), distorted, scaled, rotated and texture mapped.
- Able to map a rectangular bitmap onto any arbitrary 4-point polygon.
- Texturemap source bitmaps can be 1,2,4,6,8, or 16 bits per pixel and are
RLE compressed for a maximum combination of both high resolution and small
storage space.
- Supports transparency, translucency, and color-shading effects.
- 640x480 pixel resolution at 16.7 million colors
- 16 bit texturemapping

The manufacturer is unknown afaik... so I think it's best to let it open wether it's a hoax or not.
