The MSX could use MSX-Audio + MSX-Music.
With this potential the sound could be interesting.
There is even the old PSG for more special effects.

Do you mean the OCM with 'the MSX'? Because ppl have used audio+music together for years!

In the past, I wanted a OCM.
Sure that native support for FM (stereo) sound could play very well too.
The FM-PAC (MSX-Music) and Music Module (or MSX-Audio) could be used
even in some MSX models without expansions.
Maybe in the enthusiastic way, I found the FM-PAC and others to be the better
cartridge for MSX.
Sure that with the advent of the Internet, now i can find European Music Modules
and accessories for a very affordable price.

Two MUSIC MODULES would be great.
Imagine the possibilities using one Music Module in each cartridge slot!
The MSX and the MSX-AUDIO had some possibilities.
Even if their are not explored by the software.

Didn't you see (hear) the SME3.0 demo? I thought you did? It combines a couple of soundchips. The actual program could use the PSG, MSX-MUSIC, 2 MSX-AUDIOs and 4 SCCs if I remember correctly. |

as long as ppl realise that very few ppl have such a setup.. I'd never put the focus on a pandemonium of soundcards, I'd use one... in the 90's it was more common to do FM-Pac and Audio together, but well, dunno, uhm.. even that seems a bit dated by now.
PSG is in vogue lately, Moonsound is basically next-gen, and FMPac+PSG could be nice if there's a userfriendly do-all tracker.. which I haven't seen yet.
These 3 are the ones to focus on I think.. MSX-Audio is a bit outdated orso..
However, I dunno what eventually might show-up yet in form of FPGA in the ocm .. |

FMPac+PSG still are the way to go for me. The other cartridges almost none have 'em yet, so they will need to use emulators to hear. But I still don't trust emulators when it comes to sound.
Off course, you can do music that only some few will hear.

Well, you should maybe compare the MP3 files of the Sphere demo (OPL4) available on Infinite site and on my own site (msxvalley.msxblue.com) : one is made with MSX computer, another one is made with blueMSX ... Differences are very tiny, and that's only an example.
By the way, since version 2.3, even MSX-MUSIC is correctly emulated in blueMSX.
You can also use openMSX : same quality of the sound emulation ! |

For the moment the downloads @ infinite are not available due a crash of the server they were hosted on.. once Edwin has time (prolly AFTER the MSXDev05 deadline ) we'll see what to do..

Does it have legato-envelopes? |

It's actually the same MSX-MUSIC emulation than in openMSX 0.5.2 for which you have given good advices.
As examples are better than a long explanation, just check my site, especially the MP3 files in the under construction Unicorn section.

The last thing I remember assisting on was about FM-scaling, dunno if they improved the legato-envelope thing ..

The purpose of SME3 was never to make one music that uses all the different soundchips at once. The idea was however to allow game and demo-developers to make different arrangements of the same music, based on the configuration of the users MSX machine. For example, one version for PSG only (which plays the main melody on PSG), one version for PSG and SCC (e.g. main melody on SCC) and another version for PSG + FM-PAC or FM-PAC + MSX-Audio.
Obviously, the person who is making these musics would need to have the different music chips but the end-user not. The demo or game would then need to load the appropriate version of the music, based on the soundchips detected.

I have heard this in some emulators.
The problem is that most of the files that I had are gone or are lost.
Now, it is possible to listen Music Module and others.
Maybe I should get a good computer.
Ok, emulators are nice too! |
