Hi!
I'm looking for a 4 Mbit (512 KB) or higher MegaRAM cartridge. Anyone interested in selling or trading? I've got some nice MSX stuff around... I have posted this message also in the Brazilian forum.
Kind regards,
Edu Robsy

Maybe I could send one MEGARAM cartridge to you.

With the MEGARAM it is possible to use the playback of sound, even in the early models of MSX computers.

That would be great, Yukio!
At the moment I have the 2 Mbit (256 KB) version and it works great. I have coded a special megaROM to WAV converter, and now I can load megaROM games into my MSX using the cassette port: no need for diskdrive!
Besides that, the loading routine is very efficient: loading Nemesis takes about 90 seconds. It is cool to play such games in an unmodified MSX1 computer without diskdrive.

pitpan, are you in the UK at the moment? I have a 512k MegaRAM, if you wanted to loan it for testing purposes? I am pleased that you managed to write a loader, is it possible to download the loader? It would be very impressive with the tape drive on my MSX1!

This sounds familiar.
Ok.
One 4 Mbit (512 KB) cartridge for you.
Sure that I would need one too! |

90 seconds to load a megaram game?!? 90 seconds to load a 128K game???????
128/90 = 1.42K/sec
1.42 * 8 = 11.3kbits/sec (with no error correction)
I'm very interested in knowing how the hell you got that! |

MEGARAM checked with CHKMEM.
64 pages.
OK.
Will you check the other cartridge?
Maybe you could test how to load games too ...

Indeed, I have checked it now, and it only takes 70 seconds to load Nemesis (128 KB). Therefore, it is now:
128 / 70 = 1,83 K/sec
1.83 x 8 = 14,63 kbits/sec
Please note that this is the total load time: there is MSX standard loader, recorded at 2400 bauds. So the data itself takes less than that. Aproximately 60 seconds
It uses a custom loader (directly reading the cassette status bit from the ports) and applies also BitBuster compression. That's why it is so fast! |

I'm very curious to see this working |

It has some problems on some computers though. But I can send you one WAV to test it, if you want to. It has never been tested on a Brazilian MSX computer.

You are not using BIOS then? Will your loader therefore work not with OCM if it had a tape port? Not if you haven't followed the rules! It wont work with my TurboR either |

Probably not. I wanted to test it on the OCM at Barcelona's meeting, but people was so busy playing SPACE MANBOW on it. |
