The 8020: nope, unless you can add your own RGB connector, directly on the VDP or so.
The WSX: doesn't it have RGB output?

Daniel, which Samsung TV/monitor are you using? I have a Samsung Syncmaster 710MP. I tried the RGB SCART connectrion, and compared it to the SVHS connection, I need to make an independant audio lead though. The SVHS gives a crystal clear, sharp picture. Not relevant since you dont have SVHS on that Philips model!
The 8020 used a 9929 VDP, according to the service manual (on hans excellent site) pin 35,36, 38 are RGB outputs, but extra circuitary is needed - a little bit beyond me! Can.t you just use composite video?

djh1697, I'll check the model number when I get home. I really like the TV/monitor and it does have quite a few different kind of inputs. It doesn't have a scart connector though since its a US version of the monitor and scart is not used at all here.
Connecting the composite video directly to the TV gives a black and white picture. The reason if I understand things correctly is that the US and European composite video standard carry the intensity on the same frequency but not the color inforormation. Thats why I need to use the PAL->XGA converter because it supports both PAL and NTSC composite video.
Adding the RGB output to the V9929 is of course an option and we do have a pretty good electronics lab at work so I have all the equipment but not sure if I have the guts to do it I've done similar things in the past but its been a while and I don't want to risk breaking it.

Don't worry, there are plenty of 8020's (They're really abundant here in the NL...) |

They are quite rare here in the US though. Its like hamburgers. Here you can find a tasty one in a lot of places but in Sweden (and probably Holland) its very hard to find one |

Hmm.... Can we swap? Please? You can have all the VG8020's you want and we get those burgers |

dvik - if you pay for shipping, I can sent you an infinite bunch of 8020's
Shipping for a 2-5 kg package is about 20 euros from the NL, and for 5-10 about 31 euros. If that's cheaper than such an MSX1 in the US, it might be worth it. |

| Some interesting observations. I'm using the same TV/Monitor for the 8020 and my WSX, an Samsung LCD TV/Monitor. The 8020 is connected to the CVBS->XGA which is connected to the PC input of the TV. The WSX is connected directly to the TV using s-video.
The quality of both MSXes are very good but have some differences. The colors are not as good on the 8020. Black for example has different nyances on different parts of the screen (quite random it looks like) while the WSX has excellent color stability. But the output from the WSX has a shaddow image, especially when showing white text on black background and it also looks like a medium compressed jpg. The 8020 output doesn't have almost any shaddows.
Can someone explain these observations and is there something I can do to improve the output quality both for the 8020 and the WSX?

Building a composite videosignal from the output of a videochip like the 9918/28 gives a lot of freedom for the analog electronics. Some solutions are good, some are better.
You could build a RGB adapter for the VG8020. An example is here
(dutch only, but the circuit diagram tells all you need to know)
Any MSX-1 can have a RGB output. In fact, some have (Sony and Pioneer iirc). |

I'm trying to find an LCD monitor and cable that would give good results with a Sony HB-F1XD. Tried hooking up a LCD with the Audio/Video cable but the result is blurry and the colors are not so good. The only other connector on that machine is a RGB connector that looks like the one of the HB700.
Can anyone point a LCD model and cable that would give good image quality ? If possible compatible with Pal/NTSC frequencies.
