SymbOS MSX multitasking operating system - help needed!

I have a question regarding MSX-DOS1 and 2. Seems, that a normal MSX2 can't boot DOS2? In BlueMSX I recognized, that it only works, when the Sunrise IDE is present. Do you always need extra hardware to boot DOS2 on a MSX? As DOS2 already chooses the biggest memory mapper (which DOS1 doesn't do, right?), it would be better to boot SymbOS here, or I need to write an own mapper detection.

I hope that SymbOS will be polished, completed and finished. It is going to be THE gui, better say OS, for MSX and Amstrad CPC!

We will forget quickly EASE and MSX-View! Keep on the good work guys!

Dos 2 comes with a rom cart. But they included that in the sunrise interfaces

Thanx to PingPong I was able to test SymbOS on my real MSX2 the first time, which arrived today! Wow, the MSX is such a great machine!! The feeling is so different compared to the emulator (but I don't want to talk it down, it's great, that BlueMSX is so close to the real machine and openMSX for sure, too).

Now I have another question (sorry, again a little bit off-topic):
Is it possible to connect a normal TFT to the MSX, or would it be better to buy a TFT with antenna/scart input? Or what kind of monitor do you use with your MSX? (unfortunately my 16:9 TV cuts the left part of the screen, but only on mode 6)

yes, but I not knows if you needs change the pinout to plug it in the msx RGB output connector. so be aware... asks here about that and mentions the model of your monitor. maybe making a cable-adaptor.

Prodatron: Yes, that screenshot was from BlueMSX... I still have to test it on the real machine...

As for monitors, you can check out www.msxpro.com which have a large list of monitors compatible with MSX (mostly monitors which supports 15khz)

I just launched symbos but I dont have a mouse.
Is it mandatory , is there any short cuts or something ?

I saw TAB had an effect and tried many other key combinations.
When I look at the sample video the pointer does not seems to
move in a mouse'like way , rather in a keyboard/arrows 'like
way.

Try to type:

SET ADJUST (8,0)

... before starting SymbOS.

Yes, I use a C=1081 colour for my MSX (Which is a 8235, and some consoles like Dreamcast and Gamecube)

Prodatron, every time I've tried to load Symbos has been from MSX-DOS 1. Try to do the loader for MSX-DOS 1 as it's the only mode to use a MSX with only floppy drive. As has been told here, for having MSX-DOS 2: 1) You must have a rom cartridge (The official MSX-DOS 2 cart or MSX-DOS included on IDE or Mega-SCSI interface, for example) 2) MSX-DOS 2 takes 90 KB of RAM. Yes, if you use MSX-DOS 2 with only 128 KB you'll be very very limited.

Prodatron: did you connect your TV with a SCART cable?
Any 15kHz monitor (with enough resolution) with SCART should be perfect.

spl: what do you mean with "MSX-DOS 1 is the only mode to use a MSX with only floppy drive"? You can use MSX-DOS 2 fine with floppy drives. I've done it for years.
Also MSX-DOS2 doesn't take 90kB of RAM! It takes about 32kB extra.

As I also want to install a Moonsound later in the future, I will need a slot expander, so I wonder if I should buy one at Padial, too, or wait, until Sunrise will produce them again?

If you can, better try to buy a slot expander from Brazil, because there are a lot cheaper, and you can use your carts without modifying them. Padial slotexpander was made actually for e-msx systems, and you must have your carts without borders or without cases if you want to plug them in.

Ademir Carchano's slotexpander is sold here: http://www.carchano.com.br/index1.htm at MSXPROJECTOS section. If you want one, please contact them.

Yeah, if you have a simply standard MSX, you can't use MSX-DOS 2 if you don't have the rom cart or extra hardware, so MSX-DOS 1 is the only mode to use a standard MSX with only floppy drive. MSX-DOS 2 is an extra which yes, works greately with floppy disks.

And about 90 KB... this is the amount of RAM MSX-DOS 2 took when I used the IDE + FM PAC, and this is the reason which I've bought my 512 KB external mapper.

cax

You can boot MSX-DOS1 even on a diskless machine, using RAM/VRAM as a ramdisk
(I am talking about MicroWAVer. Networked diskless Yamaha MSX2 is also an option).
