Actually the Z80 is also available in a 44 pin smd package, as shown by this pinout. The dip version has only 40 pins. |

The 27C256 is probaly for Kanji ROM. V9990 is capable of using this feature

pages 113 and 114 of the e-vdp-III manual says all: Evaluation board for the 9990, to be connected to IBM-PC, MSX or PC-98 via three separate boards (supplied with the kit). Nothing about being a MSX1, 2 or 5  . The 50 pin connector has nothing to do with the MSX bus standard  |
