I remember that my friend made a adaptor, that worked with those weird old analog joystic ports. Do you remember the time when playing PC game with joystic meant 5 minutes of trying to get the block to middle of screen or alternatively playing nice game called "turn your joystick in every possible position and press buttons" These joysticks made PC-players really enjoy keyboard playing. Among other things it was extremely slow to read joystick position when it was turned to bottom right.
Ok, back to subject... Here are quite a nice pages about building input devices:

hah yeah, they had those buttugly greybrownish joysticks with a metal handle in the middle that could be put in every position...that made gameplay on pc's realy riciulous. I still think the good old arcade joystick is the best, and they lasted the longest...
the rest didn't quite live up to arcade for me, no quickjoy etc.

Hello I am new here and I also want to connect my old MSX- The Arcade - joystick to my PC.
I've searched all over the internet and found some schemes but I cannot interpret them into practical output. I hope to get some help here.
I have a gamepad with can be connected to gameport of pc. I read in the following link that a usb-gamedpad can be used to create a port for your digital joystick.
http://commodore-gg.hobby.nl/handleidingen/C=%20joystick%20aan%20USB%20poort.pdf
Question 1: Does this manual also work for gameport gamepads?
So yes, queastion 2: Can anybody help me where to connect what, with the following pictures of my gamepad.
Here are some pictures of my gamepad and the connector I have to which the joystick can be connected:
Many thanks in advance!!
Regards, Zoomer |

I have an SNES controller connected to my parallel port. It is supported by some MS-DOS based emulators and under windoze using the driver "directpad pro." Other kinds of controllers are supported also.

on MSX I always preferred the keyboard (8250) over the arcade turbo joystick we had, so I've always been a fan of keyboard gaming. I later learned to appreciate gamepads, but with MSX and many PC games I still prefer keyboard. Calibrating a joystick on PC was a crime, though

If the description in that PDF is not sufficient for you to be able to work this out, I strongly suggest, you find some one to do it for you. Really.
[edit]And a 50% reduction in image size of those photo's would be highly appreciated[/edit] |

I am sorry for the size. I see I cannot edit the post :-(
{trans: is there anyone who could (and would) make this for me?}
{mod: Relinked the images to the imgshack thumbs. Please try to keep the conversation in English by the way.}

Perhaps I can talk you through it if we put some effort into it. Since you asked about information at first, I assume you have a soldering iron and at least some experience in using it. If so, I'm sure we'll manage. You'll also need a voltmeter/multimeter so we can figure out a few things.
The directional part of the puzzle seems to be easy. Check the pictures below (clicky) to get an idea of how things work. Your first step is to confirm I got everything right. The pictures had a lot of gloss, and the cables were in the way, so make sure I traced the lines correctly. You can do this either visually, or using your multimeter by checking if the lines I think connect do indeed connect. By simply connecting these points to the corresponding points on the MSX'es connector we should be able to get the directional part going. It's important to know if your MSX joypad has any electronics in it by the way. If it does, it might slightly complicate matters depending on your USB joypad.
As you can see there are five basic signals. UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT and one common signal, which can be either GROUND or 5V+. To figure out which it is, plug the controller into your PC, set your voltmeter to measure DC voltage, put the RED lead of the voltmeter on the point where there's a RED dot in the picture and put the black lead of the voltmeter on the point where the GREY line ends. Try not to shortcircuit anything while doing this. Now, if you read a POSITIVE voltage at this time, then the common signal is GROUND, if you read a NEGATIVE signal at this time then the common is 5V+.
After you figure this part out, I'll see if I can figure out how to connect the fire buttons. Good luck! |

Thank you for your help. First I have to find a voltmeter/multimeter cause I don't have one :-(
