I suppose if you have a game with a different set-up, it would be included with the game somehow so you can use that set-up for your game.
Also, I think you could easily make backups of your current set-up, and from what I understood you can always go back to default.

That said, it'll only make sense if there is an MSX3 STANDARD. I mean, you could release a version of the VHDL needed to play a certain demo or game, but having to load different VHDL code everytime sucks as well. It would be more practical if an MSX3 standard VHDL was released...
|
I doubt that, you can count on it that some smartasses would udpate the VHDL to have their additions here and there. Especially when there're artists involed! So, what if a game/demo backs up the current VHDL, inserts its own VHDL, and on quit restores the original VHDL again? |

As we know, Wolf is an artist .. So, he has already some ideas for a special VHDL dedicated to music for example
Many different 'personal' VHDL ... so, indeed a menu will be required to select the good configuration (including the original VHDL) |

Answer is on the Japanese page
(Excite translation)
"- External memory
As a typical external memory of MSX, the easiness of a large capacity and obtaining was equipped normally and the MMC/SD card slot with generality height was equipped normally in single-chip MSX (tentative name) though cassette tape/floppy disk had been used. As a result, easily doing the cooperation such as reading the program made on other PC and MSXPLAYer becomes possible."
The MMC/SD card will 'replace' cassete tape and floppy disk, and programs can be transfered from PC or MSX-PLAYer to the MMC/SD card. So I guess there are some tools for that on the CD-ROM. |

I think they should add V9958 support ASAP, then implement the planned V9978, supposing ASCII/MSXA still have the papers. But considering that they are currently using 50% or more of all gates available, I wonder how much improvement would be possible with the OCM. Surely nothing too radical. Perhaps increasing the Z80 speed, or adding R800 support, but probably not adding a true 16bits CPU or a completely new one. The same for sound. FM emulation seems to be a gate eater. Maybe souped up variations of OPLL or SCC would be more practical. For example, a OPL3 kind of device (different oscilators, all voices programmable, etc) or a SCC with more channels, envelope control, etc. Personally I think it's better to extend existing chipset than add new ones. That leads to a more elegant design. I think ASCII made a mistake when didn't use a YM2203 with the MSX2. It's fully PSG compatible and add 3 FM channels (4 operators). Later they could have used something like the YM2610 to improve sound even more.

It would be nice if the OCM could run all existing MSX software before having it expanded with totally new stuff...
I still very much like this idea: software for OCM comes with a piece of VHDL which is loaded into the FPGA when the program is loaded, to accelerate certain things in hardware |

Then I wonder what to do with all copy protected disks. Have they finally developed a tool to make 1:1 images which actually work? I don't think so.
Guess we have to rely on very badly cracked versions which circulate on the internet or get the disassembler and remove the protection ourselves? |

Errr. Ever heard of MegaSCSI and its floppy disk emulation tool EP? It rocks... |
