Pacmania (MSX2, megaROM and disk format available) from Namcot is also a nice game coded in SCREEN 5, IIRC. It has a half-screen scroll, but I don't dare say it is smooth. Indeed, I consider the MSX1 version by Grandslam far superior in technical terms. And by the way, it is also more playable |

Obviously is not so hard to make a scroll routine in a screen mode like sc2 that had 6144 bytes to move!
Sc5 had 27136 bytes to move > than four times.
PacMania for msx1 is only a horrible speccy conversion, they do not even considered the use of sprites!

I know all that, but even though, the crappy ZX conversion is a better game than the MSX2 "official" version. The sprites are so small (hardware sprites IIRC), there is no partial ocultation when the characters are behind a wall, the scroll is far from smooth and the PSG sound is blattantly awful.
On the other hand, the straight ZX port has bigger "software" sprites with ocultation, smooth scroll, brilliant PSG sound (3 channels!), arcade-wise intermissions and better gameplay. Overall, it is a better game by far even in absolute terms, without considering the different platform specifications.
After this speech, I think that I am going to play it right now |

Just one correction: Grandslam's Pacmania doesn't use any "ocultation". Sorry for the inconvenience. |

I do not agree at all, it's only the usual monocromatic version. Bad! And also the two colors used are the worst selectable from msx1 palette.
I do not see big differences in sprites, except the fact that they are 3 coloured instead of monocromatic! and of course they do not colour clash the area around as the main charater does.
In between intermissions are also in the msx2 version.
As said the usual horrible convertion; they should had used hw sprites almost for the main charater, instead of colourclashing the background.
