| How to get more fun out of Realfun

Realfun will be a music tracker like Moonblaster or Soundtracker. It only supports Moonsound and needs 256KB RAM. As soon I have killed all the bugs from the sample-part (or I might even rewrite it ) it is finished as far I'm concerned. I have already started coding Realfun2.
Realfun is almost finished, but Realfun2 will be very different. So I'd like to know what features you would like to see in such software. What do you miss in Moonblaster, or in other software? Maybe it's easy to implement in Realfun, or else it may be possible in Realfun2. |

This may be a bit hard for people to discuss, since many people don't have the first version of Realfun yet. So a list of features which are implemented already or a downloadable version would be good to give people a look, feel and being able to post extra features.

sjoerd! YES! Give us some OPL4 software to play with. Only then, we can give you constructive critisism and ideas....

Ah, read the topics about meridian and you will know what to do, if you haven't already implemented it!? And i missed brightness-control in MBWave.

I believed brightness controller isn't possible with the WAVE-part of the OPL4?

/me is confused now.....Or is it possible? Doesn't the latest Moonblaster WAVE version from Marcel Delorme support this feature? Waaaaaaaaaaa.....I don't know...

you know, it's like trains..
you wait on them forever, and suddenly 2 trains show up at the same time |

It is indeed. Waiting for ages and suddenly 2 new OPL4 trackers arise, Meridian and Realfun.....Pretty stupid, if you think about it |

I'd like to see the current RealFun first, but I think you should head a (entirely) different way than Meridian. Focus on speed, an external replayer, in-game use yet avoiding the downsides of the existing moonblasters.

Latok, you're confusing the X-command of moonblaster(and mbfm?) with the one of MBWave. In MBWave, the X-command is used to change the LFO/vibrato/tremolo settings, while in moonblaster it is used for brightness control.

Realfun supports brightness like the way I think Soundtracker did. If I am right it's possible to change the brightness of all 4 operators (when using 4op fm, ofcourse). There is no brightness control for the wave-channels.
I'll create a 'Realfun probeerversie' this weekend. (I am still thinking of a way to make it explode after 3 uses ) |

Prepare for quite some claims then |

brightness control for 4op sux, we want WAVE!!!! Duh... Brightness control must be for WAVE instead for the FM garbage.

Now you've done it! Now you've made one composer quite mad!
Remember the following points, based on experience and facts:
- FM is not garbage, it never was, and never will. The elite-top of synthesizers this day, contains either true FM synths or synths that support FM in a not-yamaha style.
- opl4's wave part doesn't support realtime filtering (a.k.a. 'brightness'). Ofcourse there are some tricks here and there to fake it a little, but not without offering channels and ram.
- the FM from the opl4 (can) sound(s) fatter than the romtones, and probably also fatter than your custom ram tones. If I could go back in time, I would tell Hendrik Gilvad to try to include even more FM chips..
Besides, from your phrase I conclude that you see brightness as a lowpass filter, which isn't true at all. Brightness simply affects the modulation-level of an FM modulator, where a lowpass filter acts as a dynamic 'EQ' on any signal. FM is build-up synthesis, and substractive synthesis (as found in 90% of today's synths, including the Roland range) is wipe-away synthesis. |
