Hey there, I have a question about the copyrights and implementation and usage of the standard and logo.
As we now all know the Nintendo(os) WII can play MSX games by virtualisation (using emulation). Also, Nintendo(os) is using the MSX logo.
I thought producers could only use / wear the MSX logo when the hardware / software is compatible with the MSX standard.
Or is the MSX standard (secretly) being tranformed into a 'virtual' MSX standard where the original hardware specification does not count any more? With hardware I mean, diskdrive (can now a days be replaced for a memorycard reader), cardridgeslot (well.. you can try fitt a cardridge in a CD drive :S) etc. etc.
My point to all this.. What does the MSX standard stand for now-a-days.
What is the original standard and what has it been shifted into now-a-days...

kuuno, I don't think the Wii has an MSX logo on the case. So, they don't claim the Wii conforms to the MSX standard. Or has it?

MSX copyrights are with the MSX Association. Afaik, the MSX standard is unchanged since the introduction of MSX2 (I'm not sure whether MSX 2+ is a standard, the turboR definitely is not).

The standard basically defines a minimum set of hardware and software compatibility. On every component, it says, "or compatible". So, a PC running blueMSX and having a GameReader connected is basically a rather higly pimped MSX (You'll need that GameReader, coz the standard does state that you need at least one cartridge slot, afaik)

And does that VII *really* have an MSX logo? I can't imagine...

The use of the MSX logo is quite clear and you can find it in japanese on MSX-A's pages and in english on Bazix pages. WII is not allowed to use the MSX logo in the emulation software according to MSX-A's copyrights (unless of course they got permissions from MSX-A) but they can on web pages talking about MSX.
There is a potential gray zone for documentation or websites dedicated only to an emulator, such as the blueMSX web site. I guess MSX-A could argue that the website is part of the emulator and logos aren't allowed. So far both MSX-A and Bazix has been very relaxed in the use of the MSX logo. They only request is to not use the logo in emulator applications.
