Hmm. I never realized that there was such a big "split" in the MSX community. I knew that the Japanese generally ran lower-RAM systems (16KB for MSX1, 64KB for MSX2 and 128KB for 2+) than the Euroecene, but I didn't know that Spain and Brazil had forgotten to upgrade to the MSX 2... In fact I thought that turning MSX 1s into MSX 2s was a popular passtime in Brazil with lots of kits and stuff available.

One of the main reasons could be the lack of software for MSX2. Back in time in Spain there was not too many software available for such computers, mainly Konami imported cartridges, very few developers dare to program for MSX2. MSX1 was inmensely popular so, why take the risk?. In Holland, there was Philips, and that's enough, the MSX2 there was a bit more affordable than in Spain and with more media support. There's no other european country with so high MSX2 presence.

hmmm.... Brazil did have MSX2, lot's of people had them.

Not everybody had them, true, mostly because official companys never sold them, we just had "upgrade kits" - we took our MSX1 to the stores, and later (one week? I dont remember) they come back as MSX2.

But nowadays most active MSX users in Brazil (90% at least I think), has MSX2 or better. All the rest has MSX1 with 64k RAM or more (all MSX models comercially released in Brazil had 64k of RAM)

Let's open a new (multiple) poll :

which HW do you have ?
1) Do you have an msx1 ?
2) Do you have an msx 2 ?
3) Do you have an msx 2+ ?
4) Do you have an msx TR?

which SW do you run ?
a) Do you prefer to have new free games for msx1 ?
b) Do you prefer to have new free games for msx2 ?
c) Do you prefer to have new free games for msx2+ ?
d) Do you prefer to have new free games for msx TR?

which SW do you develop?
I) Would you develop new games for msx1 ?
II) Would you develop new games for msx2 ?
III) Would you develop new games for msx2+ ?
IV) Would you develop new games for msx TR?

@ARTRAG: Nive poll idea. I guess the first question can have muliple answers. The second two would be nice to have as single answer questions.

I can only say
(1)(3)
(a)
(I)

Still trying to find a nice MSX2 machine but they are so hard to find... ...locally in Southern CA for a decent price.

For me, it's different :
(1)(2)(4)
(b)
(II)

A little explanation : even when I play MSX1 games, I play them always on a MSX2, especially for the bright colors, so these games become MSX2 games

- which HW do you have ?
4) I have an msx tR =)

- which SW do you run ?
d) I *would* prefer new games (free or not) for tR.. but there isnt any

- which SW do you develop?
Option V? for all of them?

This is what counts for me: if the game can be made on MSX1, good. If it needs (or can have) more features (more colors, more sprites, turbo, etc) then MSX2, MSX2+ or tR.. I just like to explore all possibilities that MSX (1/2/2+/tR) offers me.

madcrow: I'm sorry but I disagree with you. In Spain MSX1 was the most extended generation but MSX2 was also well known and quite popular. A lot of MSX2 games were available here. Were all these MSX2 games sold in your country?
  • Super Tritorn
  • Andorogynus
  • Deep Forest
  • Scramble Formation
  • Bastard
  • Garyvo King
  • Testament
  • Zanac-Ex
  • Gambare Goemon
  • King Kong 2
  • Usas
  • Firebird
  • Vampire Killer
  • Metal Gear
  • Contra
  • Arkanoid 2
  • Super Rambo Special
  • Rastan Saga
  • Ikari Warriors
  • Darwin 4078
  • XYZ
  • Hole in One Special
  • Hydlide
  • Kinnectic Connection
  • Red Lights of Amsterdam
  • World Golf
  • Chopper 2
  • Laydock
  • Los Pasajeros del Viento/Les Passagers du Vent
  • Amazonas
  • Chess (Philips)
  • Livingstone Supongo
  • Goody
  • Perry Mason
  • Nueve Prríncipes en Amber
  • La Isla del Tesoro
  • L'Affaire
  • Cita con Rama
  • Aerobic
  • The Last Mission
  • Ninja Kun
  • Bubble Bobble
  • Sa-Zi-Ri

Can someone confirm if all the titles in this list were sold in Spain? I only have doubts with Gambare Goemon, King Kong II, Sa-Zi-Ri and Amazonas. And the list is only for games distributed by big importers. Other games arrived thanks to small importers (Metal Gear 2, Space Manbow, SD Snatcher and others).

And we didn't need 'MSX1 to MSX2 upgrade kits' because we could buy MSX2 computers from Sony, Philips and Mitsubishi.

(I) (but I'm able to program MSX2 of course)
