When, how and why did you start using MSX computers?

Whooow! My grand dad bought my first computer, an astonishing SANYO MPC-64 MSX in 1985. Since then I have been playing, programming and simply spending lots of time with those lovely machines. I restarted my activities with more enphasys in 1996, when I finally discovered good quality emulators and adquired a Philips NMS-8245 (my first MSX with disk-drive).
I am mainly coding PC applications related to MSX, for cross-development, and now I am developing simple games for MSX1 in pure assembly from scratch. Soon you will hear about my new project, and I expect that it will be a success: game dev comp.
Now I am the lucky owner of 2 NMS-8245, 1 VG-8235, 1 SVI-738 (128 KB VRAM), 1 HB-9P, 1 Mitsubishi ML-G1 and a Panasonic FS-A1 GT Turbo-R (to arrive yet), apart of other 15 or so MSX1 computers. I mainly use my SVI-738, a really cool computer. And I expect to use my Turbo-R as soon as it arrives here.

Kind regards!

As soon as I finish my exams I will put on-line a page with all the info about this. It is time to celebrate the MSX 20th aniversary!!! Happy birthday, MSX!!! Long life to MSX!
Expect it by the end of February. Right now, I am still looking for sponsors.

It's time to code, boys!

Wow.. three salesmen already who prevented people now active in the MSX scene from ending up with a C64. I wonder... where would those salesmen be now...

Surely those computer salesman are in the digital Z80 paradise, with a Turbo-R GT and an original copy of Solid Snake for each one... Or maybe that is my dream of a future life...

Not very original my MSX love story is...

1) i saw nemesis 2 in '87 at a friend...pfff, love story begun when i heard this incredible sound that is SCC

2) i had a yeno msx1 for the next Christmas ('87) that i always got

3) 6 months after, i bought a 8235 that i sold 6 months after for a 8250

4) 1991, i bought a TurboR that i sold 6 months after (life's so cruel when u need money...)

And now, i make collection of every konami rom i can buy (only japanese), here's my list :::

Nemesis 2, F1 spirit, Salamander, Parodius, Penguin Adventure, Nemesis...... Hope to buy a HB700F or a 8280 or 2+ when i'll have more fund

I would never sell my turboR, not even when I need the money. I mean - be fair... the money you earn by selling a GT isn't THAT much. There are (almost) always other ways to gain a similar ammount of money. Too bad people have been selling turboR's for this sole reason.

15 years ago, I bought a Salamander for 10 guilders so my friend could buy fireworks... During that same period I sold a complete NES system for 10 guilders to buy fireworks...
Bah, kids... ^^; I guess some people never outgrow the 'sell your mother for some quick cash' principle.

At the end of 1985 I was a 11 years boy with quite good qualifications at the school, so I had no problems when asking for a computer as mi christmas gift (at that time I didn't know what the hell a computer was, but hell, all my friends had one!). My father started to ask and investigate, and finally discovered that the best computer on those days was MSX (although he was close to buy an Amstrad on a sale... luckily he had no money nor credit card that day!!). So on january 6, 1986, I became a MSX1 user (Canon V20).

I also caught on a "love at first sight" when I first saw Nemesis, and even more with Nemesis 2! With the end of the 1980s, the official MSX world died, and I though I was the only person in the world still using it... but hey! Those Amigas and Ataris had no Nemesis nor other Konamis!! So I dediced to continue using my MSX.

In 1990 I discovered something terrible: Konami released Space Manbow, a shooting game requiring MSX2! And I had only MSX1!! So I started negotiations with my fathers to buy a second hand MSX2. I don't know yet how I did it, but what I received finally in 1991, was a MSX2+! (Sanyo Wavy)

Slowly I discovered that the MSX scene was something more than "me and my Konamis". I started programming assembler about 1993 (but I didn't anything "serious" before having Compass). In 1997 I met Kyoko in an internet penpals list, and at the end of that year, she bought for me an MSX Turbo-R in Japan, which I still using nowadays.

And that's in summary my MSX story. I hope it was not too boring!
